 Nikon 28/2.8 AFD lens
« Thread Started on Oct 31, 2009, 10:40am »

I picked up a second hand Nikon 28/2.8 AFD lens a few days ago. There have been many bad reports about the AF 28/2.8 Nikkors and after doing some research I thought the problem might be that the first two AF versions had the not well regarded 5/5 optical design of the ai and series E MF versions of this lens. The AFD version was redesigned to a 6/6 layout that appeared similar to the much like 28/3.5 MF version. The AFD has obviously had some tweaks to gain 2/3 of a stop in speed. Short story long was that I was not disappointed with the AFD version although it might not be quite as good as the 28/2.8 ais MF lens. Anyone wanting an AF nikkor 28/2.8 should consider the AFD version. The net is a great place to find info but you sure do have really look hard and long as some lenses have so many different versions that there seems to be some confusion as to their optical quality.

I had a chance to do some pp work on a nothing shot of my car instrument cluster. Just fooling around at near it's close focus distance and wide open. The lens gets marked down for being soft wide open but I tend to think not. Not too shabby at normal distances wide open either. The crop is a 100% crop of where it es focused.

yea, still working on why it gets a bad rap. I think 240 kph is just a tad optimistic not that I would want to in it at that speed.
