got to Giottos.com and check out the lineup. Outdoor Photography magazine says the y are the best value for the money and almost completely unknown. I just scored a Giottos 13# ballhead for dealer cost from a camera store going out of business.

I should have followed PeterW's advice in that respect. The three way head is superb for close-up work, but I would like a rock solid ballhead for distance stuff. But they ain't cheap!

My son insists what I really want a geared head, not a ball or pan head. I looked 'em up and just about fainted at the cost! I don't think absolute level is worth that to me!

John, I picked this one up for $35 and shipping he has some more. It is a beast with the sliding plate for macro work. It is an MH7001-621. I already had a Manfrotto gimbal mount for the big lens
