I have a Kiev 4 from 1975 that was my father's and it has a plastic spool. I can't state for a fact that it's the original but I think it is, my father was very careful with such things. Can you post a photo of that spool? I am curious to see if it matches what is in my Kiev. Thanks. Bob Certainly will...once I figure how it's done! You may have to be a little patient :-)

I will start another thread and post a photo of the take-up spool in my Kiev. Hopefully others will do the same and state if they have had any trouble using the spool.

I have a 4a that works great but spaces out the frames so I can only get about 20 photos on a 24 exp roll. You might check to see if the take-up spool is actuall a Kiev model. That wasn't the problem in my case but I have heard that can make a difference. The most common problem with frame spacing issues on the Kiev is dirty film take-up clutch. When I first got my 4a it was thick with dried grease. After cleaning out all of the grease and reassembling it dry (no lube) it works fine with no frame spacing problems.

Ihave a Kiev 4a which I bought at the local car boot sale. Its a fairly late model (1982) ,and although the spacing is a little out, I managed 23 shots out of 24. Perhaps they got it sorted on the later models? As for the spool it looks like it belongs to the camera The only problem I had was working out how the rewind was activated, but the penny dropped eventually..........

Bob, I just added a Kiev 4a to my RF collection. Jupiter-8M lens as well. I'm about half way through my first roll of film and will see how it works out in terms of spacing, etc. I agree with you that the Jupiter lenses are very good glass. Gene

Gene: The shot of your Kiev is neat. Makes me want to get mine out and use it, even though I already have six cameras with film in them! That vented hood really makes the look, doesn't it?

Ron, Bob, thanks. Ron, that's exactly how many cameras I currently have film in. Sheesh! And none of it colour so I'll be busy developing once I get it shot.
