I used to use the 85mm all the time on the old FE, but now I have acquired a 105mm I find that it has almost become my standard lens.
It is bulkier than the 85, but not by that much and it has one advantage photographing people - I can stand that bit further away. I have found that nearly 50% of my pictures of my Grandson & his friends have been with that lens. On holiday and for the odd wedding, the 85mm is still my weapon of choice.
I took the 35mm out a few weeks ago for photographing scenery, but I am still not sure that I am an effective photographer with it. All my pictures arel just "plain ordinary" with it!
I think the 85mm does fine for the tourist bit and for people so I would view it as a true universal lens, which the 105 isn't. Certainly gives your pictures impact!
I must get down to some serious scanning again to show you all. That's the trouble with digital - instant publication - makes it all too easy.

An MC 85/1.7 will be the final piece for my Minolta SRT setup. I choose to get the 100/2.5 first as I carry a 58mm for my normal and the price for the 100 is much less. I have tended to shoot wider than longer but am getting more comfortable with the short teles recently.

I have the SMC Takumar 85mm F/1.8 that I use on my Spotmatic. I can tell you it has produced some of the sharpest Kodachromes I have. The same optical design was carried over into the K-mount, then replaced by the 85mm F/2 M series. A lot of the Pentax boards say the compact F/2 is not as sharp as the F/1.8, but I can't really tell much difference myself. I was lucky enough to get both for a incredible bargain price of $60 (!) for each one, the Takumar in the late eighties at the local camera shop, and the K-mount F/2 at a Dallas camera show in about 1994. The Takumar showed the usual wear, but the F/2 was showroom perfect. I still shake my head when I think of how cheaply I got them for. Today, you'd have to be very lucky to get them for less than approx. $200!

I have the SMC Takumar 85mm F/1.8 that I use on my Spotmatic. I can tell you it has produced some of the sharpest Kodachromes I have. Colour me green!!! I'd love to have one of those. Fortunately I picked up a funky M42 Jupiter 9 85/2 from a local photobuddy and while it's not as smooth to use as a Takumar, it's a great lens. But, oh my, it would be a treat to have a Takumar 85. You got them for a song by today's standards! Gene

[sorry, this is getting a bit OT for the general audience, I just want to talk on the Minolta MC/MD short tele lenses]
Rover,
are You shure about that 1.7/85? The 2/85 might be the better overall lens. Up to F=4 the later lens is superior to its older cousin - unless You desparately need F=1.7. In order to achieve that mellow impression You got a 58mm (doesn't matter whether the 1.2 or 1.4) lens, that doesn't differ much from 85. The 2/85 however would fill the gap between 50 and 135mm, which You should both own, don't You? Any 85mm will result in a inconsistent lineup (50?, 58, 85, 100, 135), but the reason for that is the 100mm lens. But the 2.5/100 is the portrait lens, with the only exception of the Varisoft. Any Manual Focus Minoltian should own a copy of a 2.8/135, preferably of the 6/5 and/or the 4/4 construction. But I don't need to repeat this.
Best regards Peter
PS: Btw. I am about to sell a Varisoft. I got a second one, but both needed repair. So if somebody out there is interested... it is now in a top state with the exception of the usual blank spots on the edges of the dials.

Just wanted to add my "Hello and welcome to our group". Closest lens I have would be a Jupiter 11 135mm. Plenty of Helios 44m 58mm's and a Mir 35 f2.

Welcome, Abbazz. I have the Auto-Takumar 85mm f/1.8 and the Super-Takumar 85mm f/1.9. I also have two of the Helios-40 sets with case and filters. The Helios is a HEAVY lens in M39 mount and with an adapter for M42 mount doesn't quite make it to infinity. The picture of an Elvis impersonator below was taken with one of my Helios'. Walker

Thanks for your reply, Walter. Your picture with the Helios looks quite sharp. These FSU lenses are often hit and miss in the sharpness department, but mine is supposed to be a good sample, according to the seller. This is the Helios 40-2, which has an M42 mount. I'll post some pictures as soon as the lens arrives.
Cheers,
Abbazz

Abbazz: I don't have that particular lens, but let me welcome you - a bit late on my part - to the Camera Collector. Glad to have you here!

Casualcollector, The Sultan is fine as far as I know and I saw him on the road two days ago in its black M-Class Mercedes. As usual, he was driving himself. The Crown Prince is also often seen driving his light blue Murcielago Lamborghini but the cars from the Sultan's collection are rarely seen out of the Palace. If you want to have a glance at this collection, the only opportunity (except if you are one of HM acquaintances) would be to come at the end of the Ramadan fasting month, when the Palace's doors are open to anybody during 3 days. But you won't see the gold Leicas . Cheers, Abbazz
