Am a little behind on reading my photo mags but I just finished the February issue of Shutterbug.
In it was an article by a contributor named, William Davis. The main subject of the article was, "Shoot Film and Scan". It basically tendered to enjoying both film and digital, by doing exactly as the title states.
His mainstay over the years for shooting were a Nikon F Photomic which he bought in 1968 and a Linfof 4x5 in 1970. In 2001 he added a Contax 645.
He states though that after 30 years, lugging heavy equipment all around and being intrigued with the pictures general shooters get using digital point-and-shoot, he spent $80 and two years ago bought himself a truly pocketable camera...an OLYMPUS INFINITY STYLUS EPIC...which a couple of we members have bragged about.
For those of you perhaps not acquainted with the particular camera, it has gotten great reviews since the introduction of the original by reviewers and owners. Originally it had(and this model is still available) a 35/3.5 lens.
The newer model boasts:
a critically sharp fixed 35/2.8 lens; automatic exposure(both average and spot metering); 5 different flash settings; and closeup down to 12"-14". Neat clamshell closing over the lens and fits very easily into a shirt pocket.
And the film he uses!? color negative FUJI REALA(ISO 100) which is rarely seen around nowadays and generally must be purchased from mail order sources.
His processing is done only at full service labs because of the quality consistency over quicky mini labs.
He scans on a Konica-Minolta DiMage, uses Elements 3 for any editing and prints using an Epson C86.
This camera is the only one I keep film in and carry with me at all times. And I, too, have gotten some fine pictures with it...surprisingly so comparable to my much more expensive cameras/lenses. The 4'-20' range is its optimum.
