The Nikon forums are abuzz with speculation about the new digital SLR due out in 20 days. The guess is it's a D-70 replacement. I think it's wonderful. That will make even more folks dump their really nice film Nikons and lenses for pennies on the dollar and I'll be there to help 'em out:)

Too true! There’s quite a bit of rivalry building up between the Sony Alpha and Nikon camps. It's quite fun reading all the speculation.
I must admit, somewhat shamefacedly, I don't have any Nikons in my hoard/collection (except one APS SLR and I can't remember how I came by that). So, if I’m to get just one of the many models (to use as well as play with) which should it be?

I would recommend the FM2 or an F3. The FM2 has faster flash sync and a standard accessory shoe. But I think the F3 is the finest F model Nikon built. It is an absolute joy just to hold in your hands and the operation is silky smooth. I use my F3HP (High Eyepoint finder) most of the time as a manual wind but I picked up a like new motor drive for it that I can use if I feel the need.
The FMs (diode metering) and FEs (analog meter needle) are going for nothing right now but they are older than the FM2 and FE2 and probably more likely to have problems. I have an FM that I like just because it is so compact and I can take it into environments where I wouldn't want to risk damage to a more expensive model.
Get yourself and F3 of FM2 and pick up a "E Series" 50mm f1.8 lens. Not built as well as the standard 50mm but onlya couple of inches deep, sharp as a tack, and cheap. There also are all kinds of excellent aftermarket lenses for the manual focus Nikons. Don't think Kiron ever made a bad lens for a Nikon and most of them are super cheap.

I agree on the quality of the F3HP. Have one myself and love it. When the new FM3a came out I considered purchasing one but decided it really could not do for me anymore than the F3HP.
As for the Nikon Series E lenses, they are cosmetically built somewhat cheaper and extiorlly are plasticy, but the optics is the same as the more expensive, metal lenses and great to use.
Who knows, buy a Nikon and you may become a Nikon collector also.

I have 2 Nikons: F3HP and FM2n. The F3 is a superb piece of work -- feels wonderful in the hand and just has that 'something' that sets apart the real classics.
The FM2n, while not quite the same experience, is a smaller, lighter cam and has an excellent feel to it. Because it weighs less, I find I take it on more walks than the F3.
