Freda says, "I'm glad I don't have to dust all that!"....
Nice display Curt.

Curt, I am going to show your pictures to my kids the next time they say I have too many cameras. I couldn't even fill one of your sections with what I have. That is a great collection.

SLRs and some older Kodaks in my basement, everything else (TLRs, RFs, scale focus, folders, toys, etc.) is upstairs and Polaroids are banished to my garage, LOL. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7356924@N02/423601318/" title="Cameras on shelves by Just Plain Curt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/158/423601318_556af34eaa.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Cameras on shelves" />[/img]

Kurt,
Did you make those shelves yourself? The depth (front to back) seems to be perfect for cameras. How do you manage dust?

Hi Curt, An excellent collection ! Great display ! How long do you collect cameras ? If we could combine all the members cameras, we could open the worlds biggest and most interesting camera museum MIK

Thanks. Yes, made everything myself but as you can see I still have some painting to do yet. Dusting hasn't been a problem as I just got finished in Sept./Oct. but I still want to make doors with glass inlays. Possibly my winter project. After that it's time to redo my computer room and redesign some shelving there too. Dust never sleeps. Been collecting for a bit over 36 years now MIK. Time to slow down and enjoy using them before I need to learn to develop film by myself with caffenol or some such.

Curt, that collection is quite ridiculous (not to be taken literally: by ridiculous I mean anything but actually ridiculous).
I'm just a bit surprised you have room for books as well, though I do note they are on the bottom shelves and reasonably out of the way.
The 64 million dollar question is what is the collection worth now - and, even more so, what would it have cost if bought when new (especially so if the value of the dollar were to be fixed at 2010 rates)?
You would need to be a wealthy man to put a film through each camera.
Thanks for sharing.

Actually there are a couple dozen more books destined for the lower shelves so I have more room in my computer room upstairs. Camera cases will need to join the others in my garage. Value on the whole shebang would be a good question, some I bought for a few hundred dollars, others for little or nothing. Approx. 600 SLRs at approx. $20 average + 500+ RFs at approx. $10-20 + 500 others at approx. $5-10 is only about the value of a handful of Leicas/Contax RF/ Nikons. A wealthy man I'll never be, a fool and his money..... As to using them all, there I'm lucky too. Bought over 1000 rolls of 35mm etc. on eBay in bulk lots of expired film so it sits in my freezer. At $4 per roll to develop and burn to disk, it's a tidy sum alright but a few rolls at a time is manageable. In my area hunting and fishing is popular. A good 4x4 truck costs more than all this, then add a boat, trailer, motor, insurance, gas, and you'll see I've come away cheaply. Smokers probably go through the same in 4-5 years with nothing to show but dirty lungs. Everyone has their vices, mine are food, gambling, cameras and looking at pretty women. I said looking dear, I know I'm married, LOL.

Curt,
I might have guessed when I wrote what I did that someone here would already have a mind-boggling collection of 35mm SLRs.
Add to that almost as many RFs, and what can I say except WOW and OMIGORSH and similar inadequate innanities.
Seriously, Curt, that's a wonderful collection, and well displayed.
Your comparison of cost in relation to some other hobbies puts our addiction to old cameras into proper perspective.

Curt,
I don't know how much cigarettes cost in Canada but people in the UK 'happily' smoke at least a film a day in terms of the price. When you think of it like that, as you say, yours is not an expensive hobby.
Dave.

Wonderful, Curt.
I thought of showing these photos to my wife, to say "see dear, my collection is really tiny" (I only have ONE SRT after all, which is a shameful thing to admit to THIS group). On reflection, she'd probably get the (right) idea that Curt is my hero, and his collection my Nirvana, so I'll keep my head below the parapet and not show her the outcome of fine dedication to glass and chrome.

Hi Curt !
If someone sees my collection, the first question will be: “What is this all worth ?”, if I say “a lot”, often followed by: “Why dont you sell it ?” and “How do you manage to dust all those cameras ?” My standard reply: “Once a year I will put them in the washing machine.” In my opinion every collection has mainly an ideally value, I would pay no cent for the rarest stamp, because I am not interested in at all. I am collecting historic photo items for about 30 years and it became a part of my life, for instance, repairing and restoring old cameras is a good balance to my stressful job. And as you said, you can spend your pocket-money in many different ways: smoking, horse betting, buying a Rolex, Camera Museum entrance fee …

I get that all the time, "why don't you sell them?" and my answer is, "and would anyone give me what they are all worth?".
