Hi Sid ! You obviously must have been there in summer. At the TV news they said that the whole region has been evacuated, because they fear a flood caused by the melting snow. Your picture shows the difference between a "man behind the camera" and Google-Earth MIK

Thanks MIK. Yes it was summer, and I was lucky to have sunshine and a clear view. In Icelandic summer can be very wet and cloudy. The crater is filled with a glacier, and I believe they were worried the glacial ice might melt during the eruption. You can see two tongues of the glacier, one in each lower corner, and any deluge would come through those gaps in the crater rim and pour straight down to the south coast. If I read the photos of the eruption correctly, the lava was coming up close to the farther edge of the rim with lava spilling over the righthand side.
