What a nice catch. I have been trying to get a photo of a pileated woodpecker, at least I think that is what yours is, for years. Man they are big and noisey, sounding like a jackhammer working in the woods. Time to trim that branch in case he comes back.

Doug,
Get up the tree and wait for the bird to return. Then 'jump' out on it with a loud "BOO". That should frighten it away. While you are up there cut down the smaller branches, so if it does come back you get a clearer view of it.
Our commonest woodpeckers are smaller and green - and I don't think they as destructive or as noisy. It's not too often I see one never mind get as good a photo as yours.
Dave.

Hi Guys! He's about 15 feet up, I zoomed in on him. He doesn't seem to be afraid of anything, and I can't climb trees anymore. I won't have to cut the branches, he's doing the work for me Doug

Doug
I have a long handled limb trimmer I would be glad to loan you to get rid of those pesky branches. You don't have to climb trees any more just rent a handy electric lift. All kidding aside enjoy him while you can.

Bob, I've got a long handled limb trimmer too. I didn't have it too long before it became faulty. I took it back to the shop, but they told me that sort of fault was not covered and said I didn't have a leg to stand on. Dave.

What's this woodschwanz business? It's a pileated woodschwanz. It is obviously a frustrated percussionist with a smashing headache.
Mickey
I apologize. Our hypersensitive morality monitor seems to be working overtime. He/she must have made a new year's resolution to be as annoying as possible. The prig.

Hi Doug ! Great picture, I like these birds even if one of them wakes me up most every weekend. Ours are smaller, but they start "working" earlier. My special friend is not always a woodworker, he prefers the house front. MIK

I hadn't noticed the morality monitor doing it's thing before. I think it should keep it's schwanz in it's own business not mine.

Lampoon comes out as Lampoon - if you see what I mean. (I was using it recently as in National Lamp oon's Vacation.)
