Does the Shoshone Falls always look like that ... all year long?
The reason I ask: I've been white-water rafting on the Snake River (in Wyoming) and it's much more like that first shot in the spring, about the time of the snow melt.

Dave, some brilliant and very atmospheric pictures Wayne, also brilliant pictures of a very impressive river The river Danube in front of my doorstep is not very spectacular, but rather slow and leisurely. Took the last picture today evening just minutes before it started to snow. This was seven hours ago and it`s still snowing... MIK

MIK, the Danube is a wonderful river, flowing as it does through several countries and several hundred years of history. There doesn't seem much bank left for rising water levels does tyour area flood regularly and/or frequently?

MIK:
One of our goals is to take a European river cruise.
Ron. The really roaring photo of the falls was taken in 1997 or '98. I think it had only reached that level one other year since then--and only in early June. It may this spring because the snowfall in the mountains has been unusually heavy. Most years it looks pretty much like the second photo.
They claim that back in the 1800s, before dams controlled the river, emigrants on the Oregon Trail could hear the falls when they were still more than 10 miles away.

Wayne,
My parents went on a few river cruises. Their favourite place was Boppard on the Rhine. There are certainly several to choose from.

Sid, Is that the new footbridge? Not quite Galloping Gertie, but heading that wall till it was stabilised. Dave, the Millenium Bridge from the Tate Modern to the City. It did close almost at once for improvements, perhaps stabilisation as you suggest This was taken in 2005

Sid, yes that is the one. They found it swaying when several people were walking over it and they had to do some jiggery-pokery to sort it out.

Wayne, If you are coming through Vienna on your river cruise, give me a call and I will wave my hand to you from the riverside. If the ship will land here, naturally you are invited for a warm meal Dave, We had some minor high water here last week, triggered by heavy rain and the melting snow in the Alps. The weekend homes near the Danube are so called “stilt houses”, so there was no real damage. Vienna City is protected against flooding by a bypass-canal, built in the 1970`s. Due to the fact that there had been some hydroelectric power plants built in the last 40 years, big flooding have became a rarity. The insecure communities along the river also have mobile flood protection, which can be installed by the fire brigade within hours. The first picture, which my father took in the late 1960`s shows the ( then ) big annual flood in spring. I have seen some of them in my childhood. Pic 2 shows the unregulated Danube near the Slovakian border, Pic 3 a side arm, the natural way of flood protection and a home for protected animals. MIK

Columbia River near George, Washington (I'm not kidding) in the central portion of the state. Not much to give the picture any perspective except for the road in the lower right portion of the photo.

It's either a very big river, or a very small road, but whichever the photo is stunning.
Going back to the early 1980s Caldy rugby side had Chamberlain, Churchill and Eden playing. When the team was given to the local newspaper they got back to us because they thought it was a hoax.
MIK, an interesting series, thanks. I remember the insignia which is on the radiator as possibly MAN, but there appears to be 5 letters under it which I can't fully make out.

The Columbia is a large river--the largest U.S. rived feeding into the Pacific Ocean. The headwaters actually are in Canada. Barges can go all the way from the mouth at Astoria up the Columbia, into the Snake River, to Lewiston, Idaho, several hundred miles inland.
