Today was our annual ice fishing derby at Whitney Point Lake. The lake was built in the 1930's as a flood control measure. I took a film camera and digital, the film camera froze up, the digital didn't. This is an overview of the lake. Here you can see an auger for drilling through the ice. Here's where you end up as a beginning news reporter. They told me that they were enjoying themselves. I thought that they looked very cold. I Had a great time, and got lots of shots Doug

Brings back fond memories of 35 years ago except we did not have shelters and chairs just a plastic windbreak rigged and you sat on your snow machine/ ski doo. Never mind power augers either but then we walked 10 miles to school one way. Just kidding about the 10 miles bit. I had to give it all up in the end though as my Ex never knew how to cook all that ice I brought home, it just melted and went to waste. The modern way looks much more civilized and enjoyable.

I went ice fishing once. No snowmobile. No power auger - hand auger and an axe and a sieve. No hut. No shelter. No fish. NO WARMTH. No more ice fishing.

It's not really a British thing to do, so I've never done it!

Doug, This seems to be an interesting event. We do not have something similar here in Central Europe. Like Mickey I buy my fish at the market. What kind of fish are they catching there ?

Hi MIK ! It's actually called "The Semi-Annual Crappie Derby" . Semi-Annual because there are years when it's too warm, and the ice is too thin, Crappie Derby because a Crappie is a type of pan fish often found in that lake. Here are some of the fish entered for prizes. I was there early in the day, but heard on the news that the winner was a 24" long catfish. Here's a shot of one of the temporary buildings that had been set up on the ice. They served hot food at this one. I really had a good time, it was nice to get out of the house for some fresh air Doug

"Have a crappie day" takes on a new meaning! I've just though about the statement "they served hot food". I have a vision of the boiler slowly melting its way through the ice.

Dave, They put down a thick layer of saw dust before putting up the shelters. What gave me a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach were the ones who were taking their trucks out on the ice Doug
