Ron,
A piece of ground glass or wax paper or glassine or a flat piece of translucent plastic cut from a bottle placed on your film plane should enable you to positively compare the focus of the lens to that of the rangefinder.

Did Canon ever make an AF lens?
AF body - yes. But as far as I know it took EF lenses.
If AF refers to autofocus even if it had a FD mount, it would not auto focus on an Ftb QL which has no provision for auto focusing lenses.
Or if the lens focused independently of the body. That is had its own focusing mechanism and motor.
There was a Canon A35S auto focusing rangefinder camera made about 1978. It's lens was not interchangeable.
I stand to be corrected.

Thanks Mickey for the info; I'm eying a Canon EF 28 - 80 mm zoom lens with autofocus & manual focus which has a logo ultrasonic around the lens barrel to be used with my FTb. Thus before I purchase through the internet, I wonder will it be compatible with the FTb. If used will it be a stop down measurement.
I purchased the Ftb recently and this is my first Canon SLR

I could be wrong (and often am) but Canon made an AF lens or two for either the T60 or T80 in FD mount ( I have both but just not in front of me). As far as I recall without digging thru the pile, FD doesn't mount on EOS bodies since the EF mount is much bigger.

Curt,
There are adapters for using FD mounts on EF bodies. They contain a lens which makes them kind of expensive.
Neither of the two I have produce acceptably good results.

Mickey The FTb is a FD mount, the lens I'm looking at could be the lens mentioned by Curt. From your feedback, I guess it will be prudent for me to stick to FD mount lenses

Hye, Canon FD lenses can be used on EF bodies with an adapter, but not the other way around. EF lenses will not work at all on FD mount cameras. As Mickey said, the adapters (FD lens to EF body) must have an added glass element to allow the FD lens to focus to infinity on the EF body. Without the glass element in the adapter, the FD lens can only be used as a "macro" lens. Vivitar sold a series of self-contained auto-focus lenses in a variety of mounts, including (I believe ) the FD. I don't know from personal experience how good these lenses are. Reviews from the time period and from people who are using them now, are all over the map. If you are determined to use auto-focus on the FTbn, that is probably the only practical way to go. They show up on Ebay fairly often. Roy

Hye,
I used a Canon Ftbn QL from 1975 to 1985. It is an excellent camera. I still have it. It is like new.
Focusing is very easy even with extension tubes or a bellows thanks to the bright viewfinder and microprism center spot.
The FD mount is easy to use, quick, positive and never seems to wear. There are two different FD mount lenses both of which are fully compatible with the camera. Today, FD lenses are relatively inexpensive and there are many available.
QL (Quick Loading) is very simple and, yes, quick.
The metering is easy, accurate and responds quickly.
The camera handles beautifully.
If you want a manual 35mm camera I would highly recommend this one.
You might think from my review that I am a Canon fan. I am a Canon fanatic. I used Canon cameras - only two - the Ftbn QL from 1975 t0 1985 and the extraordinary T90 from 1985 to 2005.

Thanks Mickey, although I have a AF35M II & an early digital Powershot S20, I have never looked at a Canon SLR until I happen to chance on an FTb on the net. Went for it and this is my first Canon SLR, with your favourable description on it, I am sure of going to enjoy using this camera, only thing left now is to get a FD short medium zoom as a walk about lens, Regards

Hye,
I have a battery of lenses for the Canon FD all the way up to a Sigma 600mm mirror lens.
Of all my lenses my favourite by far is my Vivitar Series I, 24 to 70mm, f3.8 - 4.8, Macro Focussing Zoom. It very quickly became my standard lens. I don't know if it is still available. It had a short production run. I often wondered why. If it was flawed I never encountered any problem with it. Macro is only 1:5.
Going through my Vivitar literature I discovered they did, indeed make two self contained auto focus lenses. 28 - 70mm f3.5 - 4.8 Auto Focus Zoom with 1:4 macro. and 75 - 200mm f4.5 Auto Focus Zoom with 1:4 macro.

Mickey,
Thanks for the information, I'll keep a lookout for the Vivitar, the 28 - 70mm is the one I'm looking for. I've also found a Canon lens mount converter P on the net, this is for M42 lenses on FL/FD mount body, will probably receive it by this weekend. Pending my search for the FD mount lens, I will be able to use my Pentax SMC Takumar lenses with my FTb, Regards

Hye, your M-42 lenses will work fine on your FTb with that adapter. I use them on mine quite often. Here is a pic of my favorite telephoto (the M-42 Vivitar/Komine 200mm f3.5) mounted on my FTb. This makes a nice combo. Enjoy Roy
