Andy I am going to assume it is a Nikon flavour 180/2.8 you are referring to. If it is that fits right in with my experience with them also. They are a pretty amazing lens being both sharp and smooth at the same time, if that makes sense. Bob Yes it is a Nikkor 180 /2.8 AF IF ED, just before the crinkle finish AF-D version. I bought it from a teacher at my school, and besides the no AF with my D5000 it has been an awesome lens. Here is a pic of one that is exactly like it. www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/af18028n.jpgThe Orchid I have is a run of the mill version that can be found anywhere, Phalenopsis like you said Dave. Andy, I should have added that they make good photographic subjects as your excellent photo showed.
(For anyone thinking of buying a macro lens: unless you have some specific reason for wanting a wide angle or standard lens (35 or 50mm) in macro form go for a lens in the 100-200mm range. I've a Sigma 50/2.8 in Canon fit and a 100/2.8 Pentax (their original), both are AF lenses. With the 50mm you have to get too close, often a nuisance particularly with insects. I almost always use the Pentax for macro photography.)

Speaking of Micro/macro lenses, one that is on my list for myself is the 105mm f/2.8G Micro-Nikkor, used it on my D5000 a few times and really liked it. Plus I have quite the gap in focal length of my two lenses, 35 1.8G and a 180 2.8 lol, something in between would work great. Andy

They stay in flower for quite some time: plenty of photo opportunities! ;D
