Hi Again! This is the other camera that I found today............ A nice little Canon AE-1 Program. I haven't had one of these in a long while. I was forced to sell the last one, and have whined about it for the last ten years. Now I've found another, and for a pretty good price too ;D At least I think that 20 bucks is a good deal. Doug

Another shelf needs adding I would think.
I've said it before, but a poky piece of porcelain will attract a quite ridiculous price, but a remarkable piece of engineering can be obtained for next to nothing. Seems all wrong to me.

Please. Shhhh. You are 100% right but don't let the rest of the world know. I would hate to have to collect porcelain because cameras are too expensive. Mickey

A while back I was given a pair of AE-1 Programs, along with lenses, cases, etc. One has the "Canon squeak", and the other doesn't. I have yet to try them with film, but they seem to function okay. You are right about what people perceive as valuable. When new, they would have cost a month's pay, but now they are passed off like yesterday's newspaper.

Both the AE-1 Program and the A-1 were fantastic SLR's in my opinion, and despite the 'squeak' as you mentioned, were good reliable cameras. The only Canon body I seem to come across now and again at car boot sales is the AV-1, which I'm not so keen on due to the fact there was no manual control available. You're quite right with regards to prices. Most cameras (apart from the Russian Zenit's) were quite expensive overall when new back in the 1970's and 1980's in relation to average wage earnings, and I'd say the same would apply to the lenses too unless it was one of the cheaper third party brands.

Carl,
The AV-1 does have manual control. When looking through the viewfinder you will see shutter speeds from 2 seconds to 1/1000 second on the right side of your screen. Set the dial on top to A. Press shutter release half way. You may then adjust shutter speed by turning the aperture ring on the lens. Shutter and aperture are cross coupled. It may take a little getting used to but it is not bad.

What I meant to say was that there wasn't a shutter speed dial like the AE-1 Program had whereby you could select the shutter speed independently. But yes, indeed the AV-1 did have aperture priority and the shutter speed could be set by adjusting the lens. It was still a nice camera all the same.
