Hi ! My son David finished the restoration of his 1968 model two days ago. After 4 years of work ( he started at the age of 16 ) his Beetle does not only look brand-new, it is brand-new, just like taken out of the shop-window. Yesterday was a public holiday in Austria and there was also a VW-Beetle meeting not far away, where about 500 cars participated in. The weather was unusual for the season: about 30°C and sunshine, so we had a lot of fun and finally we made a round trip through a very beautiful countryside with hundreds of brandname colleagues. David and his gem Old and very old High and low Rusty and polished A roundtrip through the vineyards MIK

MIK,
Your son did a splendid job.
I imagine that trip through the vineyards must have had all the vintners worried to see so many bugs.

I grew up in Beetles. I can remember when you could fill up a completely empty VW gas tank for three dollars. Never did care for the standard heater, however. To get much heat you had to drive fast. If the roads were slick and you had to drive slow in a snowstorm, the windshield would ice up and you would freeze. 1967 (shot with a Rollei F2.8 TLR and a Honeywell strobe (the newspaper's camera). You guys could not have had a better venue to display all that hard work. Sweat looking ride.

My son had both a Beetle and a split-screen Samba. He's sold them both now. His Beetle was green too.
A good looking job. Can I book your son, MIK, when I finally get round to rebuilding my MG TD?
By the way, was there a Concours d'Elegance and if so how did he do?

MIK,
Great looking restoration. I had a 1971 Super Beetle that after I wrecked it and put it back together I painted it "Forest Green Metallic" which is a darker shade and had the faintest hint of gold flake in it. I have to agree with Wayne about the heater though, without a doubt the worst feature if you lived in a cold climate. Mine had VW's "Automatic Stick Shift". You had to shift but there was no clutch pedal, instead it had an electric clutch activated by a contact in the shifter. You could leave it in gear stopped but it was a 3 speed and in a hilly environment it just didn't have quite enough power to suit me.

Have many thanks guys ! My son will drive this car only in summer. I had a couple of Beetles myself and I also know the difficulties of the so called “ heating jackets system “, particularly if they get rusted through... Wayne, it is sad to see a Beetle lie on the back. I am glad that you don’t get hurt. Dave, I have seen some Samba-busses there, the prices of these model ( in good condition ) have reached astronomical levels here. Yes there had been a Concours d'Elegance, but we had drive home earlier, because we both worked the next day, so we don’t know if he won a price. Here is my son and the condition of the car, as I once owned it. This is was my ex-wife has made of it. And here are some “before and after “ pictures from David: MIK

That Beetle is just about too pretty to drive!

Wayne speaks the truth. Don't think I would have the patience for that kind of meticulous work. The end result was truly worth it.
