"I don't take sugar in either tea or coffee."
Agreed. Regular coffee, neither sugar nor cream. Espresso, the same. But leave the sugar out of Turkish coffee and it isn't drinkable.
"For coffee boiling water is too hot, by several degrees, releasing as it does the bitter taste..."
Starbucks coffee has a slight bitter taste that I like very much. Is that how they get it?

Even worse they probably used superheated steam to really get the temperature up. They say (I don't think I've ever had any) that THE best coffee is civet coffee. I believe it isn't cheap. Information here, wiki again: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_Luwak

Coffee. Red Wine. What's next Chicken soup, buttermilk, kiwi juice?
This is obviously an attempt by food producers to expand their markets.

"Coffee. Red Wine. What's next Chicken soup, buttermilk, kiwi juice?" Mickey and why not try crystal clear Canadian lake water? Could this be true??? "Environment : Looking for Inexpensive Photo Processing? Try Lake Ontario : The waterway is so full of polluting chemicals it actually can develop photographs. At least, that's what one local photographer says. And he has the black and whites to prove it."

"Environment : Looking for Inexpensive Photo Processing? Try Lake Ontario : The waterway is so full of polluting chemicals it actually can develop photographs. At least, that's what one local photographer says. And he has the black and whites to prove it." Col, Lake Ontario used to be a cesspool. The massive clean ups in the past years have changed and are changing it for the better. Salmon have returned and are thriving. They are a fish that requires clean water and require pristine feeder streams to breed. Other species too are doing well. All of Toronto's beaches which are tested daily are now rated clean enough for swimming. Our drinking water which we get from the lake is consistently, without any exception, rated purer than any and all bottled water. I don't know if it will develop film but it is developing an excellent fresh water sports fishing industry. There are many happy anglers making many charter fishing boat operators develop big grins. It was a while ago, though, 1990. I've no doubt that Mickey is correct about the clean-up. There was an article about the Mersey a few years ago. One branch of it had eels as the only fish that was living there ten or so years earlier. After the clean up they said there were 26 species (if I've remembered correctly).
Interestingly also, there was a double-blind tasting experiment done in the USA a few years back with all sorts of spring water, bottled water and tap water. The winner was New York tap water.

Col, That article is dated 1990 and is from The Chicago Sun-Times. CHICAGO Sun-Times!!! AKA Hog Butcher to the World and The Windy City. Now you know why. Blowhards often find fault with all but themselves. Chicago is on Lake Michigan which is upstream from Lakes Huron, Erie and Ontario. Chicago was one of the worst polluters of The Great Lakes. In 1990 Lake Erie was dead thanks to upstream pollution. It has come back to life as has Lake Ontario. I am sure Chicago did its fair part in the clean up. Dave, I have been to New York often. The water does, indeed, taste very good. But it takes scientific analysis to determine its purity. Mickey

I remember going into Birmingham (our Birmingham that is) on the train around 1960. The waterways were full of garbage, old bike, prams, beds and just about everything else you can think of - probably the odd body too. Now there is a wonderful canal system with a good proportion being navigable. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birmingham_Canal_Navigations . They say it has more canals than Venice - but they say that about everywhere that has a canal or two. Mickey, I've pondered the salmon situation. Some rivers have been 'dead' for years - well past the salmon life span it would seem. Salmon return to where they grew up to spawn Yet, when the rivers are cleaned up, salmon return. I think I need to look at some of the article on this - there must be a logical answer - is it that they have been artificially introduced, or where the rivers not quite as dead as we thought?

I am sure Chicago did its fair part in the clean up. Chicago cleaned itself up too. My parents stayed a couple of nights there in the mid 1970s. Of all the places they went in the USA, Canada and Mexico it was the only one they were negative about. Later one of the mayors set about sorting it out. I believe, if my parents could go back now, they would be pleasantly surprised. Dave.

For the most part you need people for "pollution", though there are some exceptions. I give you Lake Disappointment, as an example of WA's finest!
