Shot this even at sunset. Smoke from dozens of forest and range fires turned the western sky red. Actually the sun itself was a red ball but even bracketing with manual settings I couldn't capture it exactly. W.

"And smoke from forest fires at noon Can make the sun appear the moon I know that summer scarcely here Is gone until another year."
It seems those fires occur earlier and earlier every year.

The sun could well be a fireball. As far as we're concerned it could be anything - we don't seem to have seen it for ages.

Our skies here in Chico are red from smoke too. Fortunately, (with a resounding knock on wood!), the fires are not nearly so severe as the ones which devastated this area a few years ago. Went out last evening to try to shoot some pics, but was frustrated by junk in the frame any direction I looked. Needed a chopper! ;D Roy

Daveh, Here in the SW of France we see the sun everyday, tee shirts, shorts and flip flops are the order of the day, Regards Hye The jetstream is lying too far south so our weather is being pulled down from the north i.e cloudy and wet much of the time. Northern France hasn't been too good either.

Man you guys are getting hit hard with forest fires and prolonged heat this year. Hope you catch a break soon. The forest fires are starting up here too after a fairly wet spring. Only took a week or two of heat to make everything tinder dry after flooding conditions earlier. Always tough to try and keep the sun from burning out to some extent in those shots.

Either one would work, but the helicopter would be quicker! ;D

Here in the northern Sacramento Valley of California, the forests and wilderness areas are once more ablaze. Chico is ringed on three sides by large out of control wild-fires. While the communities on the valley floor ar in no direct danger, the air quality is TERRIBLE! Smoke and ash fill the air making breathing difficult. Here is a shot taken this morning (8/14/2012) at about 0610 local, looking east from the front door of my shop. One can taste the smoke in the air! Roy
