I have a the above lens for an AE-1 It will not close down automatically when taking a shot. I have thought about using it wide open, 1.4, and let the speed compensate, until it goes off the chart. Then I dont take the shot use it for only indoor work w/400asa ?? your thoughts? PS the lever that cause the closedown move, but becomes catchy near the far end of travel. a different feel than a properly working fd lens.

Take it to a repair agent, it should be an easy job to cure, independent or official Canon. You can do it yourself, but it means releasing the back of the lens, a full tool kit, and some experience. But in the meantime try a compressed air line on the back, or a power blower or even a squezzy bottle with a fine outlet, to give a puff of air to check there is no rubbish in the way of the levers, hidden just out of sight.
