And here's the bridge! (same reason for the flaring). This would have essentially been at 90 degrees from the shot of my son. I liked the way the bridge, the distance trees, most of the shadows and the semi-plowed walkway, all converged together.

Nice shots of the family Ron - and the snow scenes. This has been an interesting post and discussion. Paul's comments about scenics compared to 'family & friends' raised some interesting points together with Ron's about the interest shown in family albums.
I think you can make a distinction. Photo's of people are interest to us because people are intrinsically interesting to other human beings. When these are of our friends and family the interest is intensified, to the point where it doesn't matter at all if the photograph is a good or bad one (I would say that it isn't possible for a family snap to be bad unless you can't make out the details of faces).
Scenics and, to some extent wildlife photography, on the other hand, depend to a much greater extent on what the photographer sees in their mind's eye and what they put into their shot. You have to have a feel for what makes an interesting shot, and importantly, your views on what is interesting should coincide with those of others - or they'll find your photographs boring.
The most interesting photo's of all in my opinion are those of family and friends where you manage to put them into an interesting context. And who wants to sell their pictures anyway? !!
Regards - John

Hi John, You wrote: ... And who wants to sell their pictures anyway? !! Well. Valerie and I did, for years, or we wouldn't have eaten. But that's a completely different ball game from this topic, and probably from this board in general Peter

Peter,
My point was that nobody's going to make money from family snaps, so enjoy them for what they are.

I do, John. I've got hundreds of family snaps that I treasure, but I wouldn't think of selling them. As I said, selling pictures is a different ball game.

Peter

Ron, that shot from Winsor Ontario brings back memories. Do you remember CKLW the BIG 8 when they were the voice of Rock and Roll? When I was a young buck CKLW was the radio station of choice here. I remember driving through the Winsor Tunnel on vacation with my parents, and it looked like water was seeping through the walls.

And it still looks like water is seeping through the walls of the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel! May be why I so much prefer the Ambassador Bridge! ;D By the way, I finally remembered to bring those 12 old rolls of "found" 35mm film with me today, so I can drop them off for processing. Also found an old roll of 120. Should be interesting to see what's on them!
