A lens maker(?), Tomioka, seems to have a large impact on fine lenses. According to the forum called mf-lenses Yashica ML lenses are made by Tomioka, and they are stating several Yashica lenses do better than Zeiss couterparts, e.g. ML28 2.8 vs Distagon 28/2.8 and so on. Although lens sharpness is not everything, these fact are interesting. Somewhat confused now, as lately discussions state Russian lenses are sharper than som Germans and now, Yashica lenses better than some other well known high quality brand. Likely, if true, I could buy Yashica lenses instead of Zeiss using on Contax body, saving a lot of $$$$. Hmm... Source: forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic.php?t=9294This said, I know lens sharpness is not everything, as small vibrations can cause unsharp pics no matter lens used. However, my Yashica ML 50/2.0 is sharp, I am very impressed by this humble lens. It did not cost much either.
