The women morrismen seem to have been there right from the beginning of the revival (judging by that stupendous 1912 film).
The film restoration was an amazing feat, synking the dancing to the music. And the content is invaluable, from a hundred years ago.
Morris dancing a damn good excuse for a pub crawl? They certainly seem to get photographed outside one. Look at Phil's above.

And the strangest British Clog dancers of them all, the Britannia Coconut Clog Dancers of Bacup, known locally as The Nutters, following a very old tradition of "Moorish" dancing, which was corrupted to Morris dancing over the centuries. More clog than Morris!

And a comparison shot, taken on film,(Fuji "Agfa" Poundland film), with Altix and 50mm F2.8 Tessar, scanned with Micro 4/3 on copier, then through The Gimp.....Digital is so much easier! Clog Dancer taking a bow with the Hurdy Gurdy Players.Digital, slight burnout curable in the gimp.

More clog than Morris! Stephen. What great entertainment. I loved to see the little boy joining in at the end; perhaps a future recruit?

Rather like the Padstow Hobby horse on Mayday, the Britannia Coconut Men parade and dance right across the town, dawn till mid-day, dancing between each venue or houses of local residents.
Claims are made that the Padstow Hobby horse is far older, and is a fertility rite, with Morris Dancing more related to celebrations. The black face was duel, Morrish appearance, and they were all miners. The make up granted anonymity, and in the Padstow dance the identity of the dancer in the horse is secret to the onlookers.
It was said the make up was to protect the Dancers from the Devil! as Dancing was a revel, and disapproved of, especially during the Commonwealth. Most pre-Cromwell records simply do not exist, but Bacup claim they date from about the 12th century, with Abbots Bromley dancers claiming 10th century origins.
What is a bit annoying is the sad lack of support for a British tradition, we accept French, German and Austrian folk traditions and national dress, but can despise our own even older traditions, mainly due to plain ignorance.

... and is a fertility rite ... Ethnologists always came up with fertility rites. It's their way of saying "don't know".
