A local camera shop owner was really taken with how smooth and quiet the XE-7 shutter release was and often asked me to let him click off a picture. In my collection, the XE-7 has the smoothest film advance throughout the whole range. It is so smooth, it makes me wonder if there is something wrong with my other manual SLRs.

Yes Stan I understand, I bought a D40 back in the day and instantly loved the grip. I never had one before. My 16mp Pentax campact has been consigned to the bottom drawer in favour of my 6mp Panasonic FZ7 with grip. A much nicer camera to use

Ah, the FZ7, or the North American version was a source of much consternation when I was looking for a "super-zoom", it came down to that or the Nikon CoolPix 8800 which won out.

Gentlemen, once again i read the Minolta xe1/7 is the same camera as the leica R3 and was in its turn developed by leica. This is a common misunderstanding. I don't wan't to go in to much detail there's enough to be found on the subject on the www. Minolta X1 and leica R3 do share the same frame or body but they§ have diffrent mirror boxes. The R3 was designed to be motorised hence the R3 mot version a motorised xe1 never existed . This by no way means the xe 1 is a lesser camera it just isn't a Leica with a Minolta badge. Concerning the best Minolta ever made i still prefer the XM/XK. I've bought one the day they came out as way back then they had spectacular specs. My plan was to replace my nikon gear by Minolta stuff, but after a brief period with the XM, the poor professional back up of Minolta and the fact that if you wanted a motor drive you had to buy the rediculously expensive XM mot, i went back to nikon (F2), after a short while the F3 was introduced and i never looked back on Minolta. A little anecdote on the Minolta /leica story is that minolta users often tend to find the XE1 the best camera ever, while leica fans often describe the R3 as the worst leica ever made Here's a pic of what i've got left of these type of cameras, my motto being buy them and try them !

Interesting tidbit about the XK is that it has the fastest sync speed of all the horizontal titanium shutter curtain pro SLRs at 1/100 of a sec. Canon New F-1 @ 1/90, Nikon F3 @ 1/80 and Pentax LX @ 1/75.

Canon New F-1 @ 1/90, Nikon F3 @ 1/80 and Pentax LX @ 1/75. Minolta allways seemed to be keen on having the highest shutterspeeds on their top of the line cameras, when all other manufacturers decided a top of 1/8000 should be sufficient minolta made the maxxum/ dynax 9Xi with a top speed of 1/12000 syncing at 1/300. In the end all to no avail as you see what happened to the brand...

In the end, I scored a fully functional and well dressed X-700 which was the European Camera of the year in 1981 . . .
I am trying to come up with a timelapse project to take advantage of that multifunction back.
