Someone once told me that people who collect cameras are allways photographers , be it amateur or pro, my question is : does this apply to you as well? or is there on this forum a white raven who only collects cameras but dos not use them ?

I haven't shot pictures with a film camera since about 2008 but since then I have shout several thousand digital images. I collect film cameras and use digital cameras. . . but one of these days I might shoot some film just for fun.

I would like to occasionally shoot film with some of my 250+ cameras but it is too expensive.
So, occasionally I pick one up. I dust it off. I fondle it. I operate it. Then I put it back in its allotted place on a shelf.
I then heave a big sigh and return to shoot pictures with my digital Pentax K-5. I have uneasy feelings about being a traitor but I overcome them.
If anyone who takes pictures is a photographer then I am one. But I think a real photographer is one who makes, that is puts some effort into producing the pictures rather than snapshots. That is for the judgement of others, not me.
Hey. Either way, I am content. Now where did I misplace my 8" x 10" Gundlach Korona?

At first I was only a photographer, this is more than 30 years ago. Then I became interested in cameras, I found this forum, and discovered I also was a camera collector.
What is the precise definiton of a camera collector anyway?
There are different collectors. Like me, photographing with collected cameras. Others, wealthy people may invest or do not know what to do with all their money, collecting expensive cameras as a hobby. No wonder all estate sales on the auction site. Some collectors are more eager than others, learning camera repair techniques and service, or the history of camera, and so on. There is room for most type of collector, all on their own level, is my opinion. It is a friendly hobby, and one can be small or have large collection.

I collect cameras. I use what cameras I can from my collection. I also take digital photos using old lenses and even ones salvaged from broken film cameras. Mostly I take family photos, but once in a while I have a project I can get my teeth into - then I go into photographer mode. I dont shoot so much film, but when I can I take a film camera and my digi cam with me.

I try to be a photographer but fail a lot of the time. That is the good thing about digital I can shoot hundreds of shots and get maybe 3 or 4 decent images I'm happy with. My daughter on the other hand has got the makings of a really good photographer, she has a marvellous eye for images and gets the framing spot on. Hopefully she will try to get some formal training as well. Mickey, try out some of the Air Force photographers from our side of the pond, the RAF photo competition has some brilliant shots. www.raf.mod.uk/gallery/rafphotographiccompetitions.cfmMatty

I have never tried to be a photographer. I will attempt something more considered, but essentially,I am a snap shooter. This may stem from my ASD whereby it's like everything is like snapshots which my brain does not link together to make a film. i.e. I see details whereas most are able to filter out stuff to kind of create a continuos film, which, like any film when frozen on a frame loses detail. It does not help my snap shots though !! Collecting cameras is a separate issue of familiar 'toys' creating a comfort zone.
