I have used PowerPoint, Excell, and Googlesites in the past to establish a database for the 400+ cameras in the collection. I am not interested in how much I paid (don't want to remember). Rather I need to store lots of photos with details on history, and have it on my computer, not entrusted with Google or some blog host. There used to be a guy who sold simple software specifially for camera collecting but he disappeared. Any suggestions?

Genazzo, I,too, used to know such a guy. His programme was called E-Z Personal Collector 2002. www.EmmasCollegeFund.com An ECF Product. It was easy to use, adaptable to my specific needs including photos of my equipment. I was well advanced in recording most of my collection when I switched from IBM to Apple. E-Z was not compatible. I still have the print outs from it and the disk but the IBM computer entries are long gone. My frantic hunts for a means to convert it to Apple ended after several years as did any semblance of proper records. I am now due for a new computer. It will be an Apple. I understand some of the new ones will accept the old IBM disks. So now the research and searching begins with lots of skepticism and some hope. Mickey

I wasted months of work on my google site with 600 or so photos and text. I have the entire site of about 100 pages in original HTML which I know how to edit. However, the editing is a prodigious job. I won't trust others with my work again.
If you find a good software database package, let me know.

Merry Xmas to all, jpp You can include photos into Excel. I did it with my mp3 collection of 50,000 albums plus. A helluva job. I gave up after 6 months. I am building a printed card system with a standardised layout. Including photos, reviews, serials and advertising pics. Also included is what I paid and how to assess the value. So when i am gone so the kids can dispose of it all properly and intelligently.

There is a software called The Antique Camera Collector. It seems like an easy Project to get up and running, also for non-technical users.

The "Antique Camera Collector" was part of a collection of "collectors" programs, all of them are no longer listed on sites for download.

Open Office have a Photo database in their database templates. It is also reasonably simple to configure a database from scratch.

Open Office have a Photo database in their database templates. It is also reasonably simple to configure a database from scratch. This is an excellent suggestion. We could also create a Collector database together, using Libreoffice (former Openoffice). What kind of data Fields could be required? Camera name or lens name Model Variant Description Image of item Location And so on. What kind of data are entered in Your exisitng Excel sheets?

The most difficult part of the design of any database, is deciding what fields you wish to incorporate. (Open Office also needs some thought as to the order in which fields are presented on the form - it isn't easy to change once set up). Other fields to put in could be - Purchase Date, Cost, Sale Date, Price, Condition, Repairs Done, Date Repaired, Cost.
If you wish to be able to search for a piece of information, it needs a field.

I had to finally settle on a database where I could rescue the surviving pages of my old web site and begin the task of re-organizing my collection. I settled on using Fotki and so far there are about 90 cameras with over 500 photos including notes and historical information. It would probably be better if I had the database securely on my own computer, though.

Thank you John for valuable input. I am going to create a Camera Collectors database using Openoffice. I have taken into account Your input. Here is what I have done so far: I have added a data Field "In Collection" Down to the right. If one start a Collection, one can enter all cameras and models in advance, then it is easy to run a report to find uncollected items. If anybody else have comments or additions, welcome!
