I'll have a look, traditionally I understand Japanese pay top dollar so maybe no place for bargains. I'll watch some.

Here one example listing. Price not bad, if this will be the winning bid. There are several such auctions. I registered today, it seems simple to get the items. Electro Spotmtic, only in Japan?

I just won a Super Takumar 35/3.5 in almost mint condition for $15. Will update when the lens arrives. Compared to ebay UK, lens and shipping is 1/6 of the price.
I saw several Canon EF film cameras, strange if you collectors not would use this auction site. Yes, if you live nearby thrift- or pawnshops, there is no point ordering from auction. For the rest of us living in distant Places, these japan auctions can be great value.

And I got a mint Pentax SL with Super Tak 55/1.8 for $20. I would not call that top dollar, the japanese people are not the only ones cleaning out old film gear.
A note about shipping. Check out the shipping calculator before bidding. Even if you win a big lot for one cent, the shipping could easily be estimated to $100. Small items like a camera or lens cost about $16-20. A lot less than from other auction site, wordwide.

I wonder what the import duty and charges in the Uk would be.

I used this site to get a Canon 7 body. Shipping via EMS, I got the package from Japan to my home in 9 days flat, completely unbelievable. 21 days from auction end taking into account shipping inside Japan, packing delays and so on.
As for prices, make sure you estimate the shipping costs beforehand and read about the bank and handling charges. I did not find them unreasonable but then I am so far from big markets than anything seems reasonable to me.
The translator provided is good enough for what I needed.
Tip: I noticed that Pen D half-frame cameras are going for peanuts.
