This tired piece of gear is one of a bunch of cameras I bought at an auction yesterday. The rest of them (a mixture of SLRs, rangefinders, point and shoots and box cameras) are all in a similar tired condition. This particular Zenit E is unusual - it is an early one with M39 lens mount, but it appears to have an instant return mirror. Most of the M39 mount units had the more basic mirror, like the 3M. The auction house I obtained this from is the last one left in town, and unfortunately it is soon to close, as the owner is retiring.

It is sad to see that often well known local shops are closing down, in most cases because they can't compete with the internet ones. It saddens me to know my favourite second hand camera store will close down within a year because of old age of the owner. Now it is my experience prices in such shops often are quite diffrent than what you find on the net, in both ways either cheaper or more expensive. These shops have ( had?) a large advantage over the net as you can hold and inspect what you plan to buy and secondly on the "cheapo" stuff you don't have to pay postage wich in some cases exseedes the price of the item. Only last week a was very lucky once more when i passed by the store and found this wonderfull polaroid SLR 680 for only 19 euro's !!! don't think you 'll find such a price anywhere on the net... Oh well guess we'll have to live with the fact you can't stop progress and things we held for granted will change for better or for worse.

The version is original, they were made for the home market, and exported in small quantities.
