Here's a few black beauties, from the days when black slr's were "special" and you had to pay extra for the black over the chrome version. As a genaral rule the older the camera the rarer the black version will be.Everything changed in the seventies when plastics took over and subsequently from then on black was the way to go and chrome versions ceased to exist. These days things are getting worse as nikon is bringing out "barbie" pink and metallic red versions of some of their products, pentax going bezerk with offering almost any color in any combination you can think of making some cameras look as if they were designed by Mondriaan.

The canon "new" F1 is kind of a special case as it is dead black. I like this finish because it's more discrete than the "normal"shiny black on most cameras. The Leicaflex SL 2 has a similar matte black finish and so does the nasa nikon F camera (wich sadly isn't in my collection). This kind of coating doesn't age very well as it gets somewhat patchy in use, i guess that's why so little cameras where made with this kind of finish.

I fully agree on the F1-New finish. This LA-model brasses beautifully, by the way. Another of my favourites, simple, reliable, and very nice optics (Ultron with the concave frontlens). Of course no match for the Japanes tsunami... IMG_2042 by Hans de Groot, on Flickr

I don't have many black beauties. Had a black Nikon FA with signs of heavy use. I had to return it, because the signs of use also affected function. But since some month I have this one, which I really like. Nikon FA by Johannes Hromadka, auf Flickr I have a few more black cameras, Minolta X700, Nikon F301 and F801s. But as far as I know these models have never been sold in chrome. Hannes

I've noticed the contax RTS has a semi-matte black coat, not as matte as the Canon F1 but not as shiny as most.Still it was the only "color" available as i can't recall it was ever available in chrome.

My Leica R3 is a "flat" black. I thought that this might be an anodised finish but I'm not sure.

And the GAS strikes back... Just couldn't resist: IMG_2240 by Hans de Groot, on Flickr IMG_2242 by Hans de Groot, on Flickr All right, not the best pictures, but as I sold my OM stuff years ago, the OM2n was a must have from a nostalgia point of vue. The RTS is just the body that came with the 1,4/50 Planar, one of the few 1,4 lenses which can be used full open. Hans
