Greetings! My name is Mike and I'm from Michigan. I'm excited to have found this group and am looking forward to learning, sharing and growing as a collector. For me, my hobby turned into a passion after I purchased my first Canon Xti DSLR. Before then, I was a point and shoot camera guy. As my daughter and son were growing and becoming more active in sports I needed a camera that could take my photography to the next level. Before I knew it, my hobby turned into a passion. As time has passed, I've become more interested in the history of photography and the early cameras.
I'm excited to start a collection of vintage cameras. I would love for my collection to have a camera representing each of the different types of cameras manufactured. I'm sure I will learn more and my list will continue to grow. I'm hoping to add:
- Single-Lens Reflex Camera
- Twin-Lens Reflex Camera
- Instant Camera
- Folding Camera
- Box Camera
- Rangefinder Camera
- Sub-miniature Camera
- Stereo Camera
Today, I took my first step and placed a bid on a Rolleiflex: ROLLEIFLEX I ORIGINAL TLR 6X6CM, WITH ZEISS 7.5CM 3.8 TESSAR.
Wish me luck. I'm excited!

Sounds like a list of the Usual Suspects, a nice selection to go for. But use the net to read up on the types, every bit of extra knowledge is priceless in collecting. Don't forget the search function on this site, it may bring up useful references. welcome, Stephen.

Surely you mean the 20th century, not the 19th. If not good luck finding cameras on that list in the 19th, and of course the Rollei is from the 20th.

Hello Mike, and welcome on this forum. When i started collecting some 40 years ago i focussed on polaroid, folders and miniature cameras. Throughout the years and with the digital revolution my focus changed towards 35mm SLR's of the post 1960 to the pre digital era. I've noticed as a collector your preferences change, due to personal reasons and what the "market" brings you. The only good advice i can give you is follow your heart (how cliché), buy and collect only those things with wich you have a good feeling and wich you want to keep . Buying gear because you think it will raise in value allmost allways turns out wrong. The folders, miniature and polaroid cameras from the beginning of my collection all have gone down in value (a lot). Another advice is to stay away from cameras that don't work, exept when you're a skilled repairman, the cost of repairing a "bargain" camera will allmost allways exceed the price of a good example (same goes for missing parts). Still be prepaired to have some luck, sometimes there are real bargains to be had, some other times you end up with something you paid way to much, that's the way it goes in every collection. When you're "chasing" after a specific camera you are likely to end up paying to much, good things will come to those who wait Oh and unless you've got money to burn be carefull when buying expensive cameras as a beginning collector. The rolleiflex you mention is a nice camera but it has it's bad points, they are now over half a century old, film transport, focussing mechanism and frontlense prone to scratches are just a few things you might not be aware of as a novice collector. These "problems" will put the price of a camera in to perspective. Anyway i wich you all the luck and joy in our beautifull hobby and hope to see how you progress in building out your collection. François
