OK, just giving it another go and thought I'd post picture of my Praktica SLRs, my biggest collection of a single make of SLR, 73 cameras in total, all in working order, I'm kind of partial to Praktica's as a super TL was my first try with SLR photography.... please excuse me if the picture is not here , after all just practising

And particularly impressive is the gravity defying, floor-space saving vertical stacking.
More seriously, the ancestor of the Practica, the Contax SLR was not only the early prism 35, but launched what later beacame more well known as the Pentax mount, so it a very illustrious pedigree.

Indeed the Contax reflex was purely Zeiss Ikon from East Germany, Pentacon stood for Pentaprism Contax. The State owned Zeiss company made the Contax as a separate camera to the Praktika, which was produced by the KW section of the State producer.
As wrangles over the Contax continued with the West, Pentacon was chosen as the name of both Zeiss Ikon, and KW (also Altissa etc.), and they also absorbed Exakta.
Most of the factories were run as Communist State enterprises, except where legal action on ownership or rights existed, like Exakta.
KW were State owned despite claims from the pre-war owners. The KW Practica, (from the Practiflex), went on to be the longest series of German cameras ever produced.

camfiend, I was doing some simple math and if those cameras averaged 3 weeks money when new there is the equivalent of over 4 years’ worth of wages sitting in your Praktica collection alone. Since the Aussie average in now about $50K – there’s $200K when new sitting there.
One of the great tragedies of modern times is that I can buy a camera that cost 6 weeks wages in 1980 for the equivalent of a few hours wages these days.

Cor, so many Prakticas, so little time. I thought I was doing well with about ten (haven't had a chance to catch up with cataloging the collection recently.) Just wondering how much did a Praktica go for in Australia in the 80's. In the UK a MTL 5 was about £65 (one pound is about 2 dollars 13 at the moment.) I remember this as I was saving up for my first proper camera in the early 80's, the choice was between an Oly Trip for roughly £40, a Zenit EM for £35, Zenit TTL for £55 or the Praktica. Eventually went for the TTL as I couldn't bear waiting any longer. In terms of weekly wage equivalent £55 was about a week and a half's wage for my first job, Archaeological Excavator for Liverpool University/Peel Castle Trust in 1984. Anyway, I've now got the original wish list complete, Oly Trip (for a fiver), Zenit EM (£15), TTL (£10) and the MTL 5(part of a job lot for £20), only had to wait 30 years.

I couldn't even guess at the cost of most of the cameras in my collection but I know there's no way I could have afforded to buy them way back when... I did however manage to collect quite a few 'obsolete' cameras even then ( such as the old no longer wanted box cameras) and many of the simpler plastic variety but only today when you can buy a $1,000 camera for $50 can I afford to amass such variety... very sad in a way that these cameras are no longer treasured articles and film photography is fast becoming a thing of 'ancient times' as to is the camera itself.. quickly being replaced by the PHONE

Hello! I need help about a Praktica LTL 3. The shutter blades never open when shutter button is pressed. Has anybody experienced sometihing like that? Shutter speed seems to never change also. At least it doesn´t sound to change.

Ok, that helps a lot. So I guess that some parts are disconected. They might be loose or broken. Judging by the high mint condition of my Praktica, it seems like it stayed in a store exhibition or warehouse for decades. So maybe it needs lubrication. I guess I will have to take to a camera repair shop to make it work. Thanks for your help!!
