I have a good condition Kodak VP, 127 standard type, that has a problem, the struts do not lock in the pulled out position. There appears from tiny holes to be a shaft across the space between each side to be missing.
Can any member who has a VP please take some close-ups of the struts, where they attach to the lens panel, on both sides and a view inside from each end. It should then be able to see what is missing and make a replacement part.
The camera has the Autographic pen, original canvas case and the original Kodak box, so is in good enough condition to be worth restoring to fully working order.
Also where is everybody?, no posts since the 13th.............
Stephen.

The shot shows the front, but I need pictures of the areas behind the front plate, especially the bottom struts where they slide, there seems to be a missing cross connecting rod. Shots in the direction of the yellow arrows would help a lot.Stephen.

Steve, I have eight photos of the VP but PhotoBucket is not cooperating. I have exported them to Desktop but they appear so large that only one picture at a time will get sent per page. I can do that if you wish. I will be happy to follow any suggestions you offer to improve things.

I tried to send one only to discover I don't know how to do that without Photobucket.

Many thanks for all your efforts, I think I can just about make out what is missing, it is the end with the prongs, the other side of the lazy tongs are functioning all right. I will study it a bit more and see what is needed to get the slide side to lock in position. Stephen.

This seems to be the missing part, quite how it locks the camera open I am not sure as yet, maybe the big diameter ends have a spring inside? In the end the best solution is to buy another, and examine by stripping the whole expanding tongs. Stephen.

There are a few VP on Ebay, including a pair for spares, so I may well go down that route, and buy another. I think mine is worth the work, as it has been looked after, shutter works perfectly and the lens is nice and clean, and tested already with an elastic band to hold the legs of the struts tight. It gives very sharp results.

Curiously , none of my three VP has what you call the "missing part", and they extend, retract and fold flat normally link

After fiddling around with the camera for quite a while I conclude that the only purpose of that shaft is to keep both the left and right struts synchronized in their upward and downward movements. The lens board will not lock into place if one side precedes the other. It can be locked without the shaft if both sides move together as JPP said.
I wonder what came first. The serial number is on the swing down leg. My newest which has only a black painted body with a faint krinkle is 1572784. Last Patent date Nov. 28 1921. The oldest with a leather covered body is 215202. Latest Patent date August 28 1917. Peculiar, no?

I think I have worked it out, the little slider in the rails was once riveted to the strut, it is a missing rivet and not the bar across type. There must have been at least two models. I will fit a bolt instead of the rivet and see if it works better.
