I bought this camera against better judgement, knowing it had a problem with the zoom.It has cost me 20€ and came with two good batteries.
I thought that maybe i would be able to fix it.Everything works exept for the zoom function. The problem either had to be mechanical, damaged gears, a faulty zoom drive motor or electronic, circuit, contacts and such.
After a brief inspection i could bring the problem down to the zoom switch, as it commands both the lens zooming function and the playback zoom as both don't work.
I was lucky to find the full service manual of the P6000, however going through it soon made me realise it is beyond my skills to do any repair work on this camera.
To get to the zoom switch the camera needs to be taken apart completely, wich involves de- soldering diffrent parts and circuits. The electronic schemes were clear on how the zoom command is given but even if i would be able to reach them what would i be able to do to repair them?
Further more when reasembling the camera some circuits need to be recalibrated for wich you need a specialised bar code reader and so it goes on and on...
End of the story, i'll keep the P6000 and maybe use it occasionally as a wide angle camera, it's a pity because its a fine camera with one big advantage, the lens is fully retractable whithin the body so it is an unobstructive quality camera to put in your pocket.
Bringing it in for repair at nikon is useless as the trick they pull on you is the cost of the repair is the price of the camera when new minus 20 % (had it with a fuji S2 and a 18-200 VR nikkor) or they just say it can't be repaired and charge you 80 euros for the estimate.
if anyone should be interested how complicated these cameras are ( at least to me) here's the link to the service manual :
