Been wanting an Argus for a while now. Found one at Goodwill for $10.00. Never checked it out good though. Got home and realized I needed 2 hands to focus. Now I see it's a common problem. Found a video on You Tube and watched it a couple times. Argus C3 face removal. Wasn't too bad considering I've only worked on Kodak's and a few Pentax's. Everything went well until I got up to let the dog out and bumped the small kitchen table I was working on.......and with the faceplate off guess what went first ? Lol ! The shutter blades ! Never messed with them ! Now I have ! After putting them in backwards and having them spring CLOSED when I hit the shutter, I figured it out ! Got it all back together and it works great ! And when the covering gets here in a month or so it'll LOOK good too ! For now it works !

I bet the poor dog gets all the blame in your house! Good stuff, nyweb. That's the sort of thing that happens to me, even though I don't have a dog. P.s. Why did you have to choose nyweb as your name? The iPad automatically changed it to my web: I just noticed in time.

I'm from Western NY. I used to build websites and had to come up with a name really quick. I have e-mail and usernames with that. Too lazy to change it !

nyweb,
Stiff focussing is very common with the Argus C3. Most people turn the lens rather than the geared wheel at the top of the camera. It is easier and faster. However a single drop judiciously and sparingly applied lighter fluid or WD40 to the base of the lens where it enters the body and the lens tube just in front of that, the top gear around the rangefinder window where it enters the body and the cable release hole at the top of the shutter release will usually free up everything.

nyweb, The focusing was stiff to near immovable on most of these. It seems to be a genetic problem with C3's. They were treated with either lighter fluid or WD40 or, occasionally, both. They all now focus freely. Mickey

The more I look at them the more I see of that problem. Ideally a removable focus dial would have made that brick almost trouble free ! It is what it is though !

I think the problems may be due to the fact that all those cameras were lying unused for years. The lubricants may have thickened or even solidified. Canon had such problems with cameras that were still current and in use. I do not know what dial you refer to as the focus dial and how would removing it help. Mickey

The dial we use to focus. It says Rangefinder on it and shows distances from 3 to infinity. On my picture it's the top dial on the left. Looks like that dial is pressed into the brass "cam" or "concentric" which is seen from inside the front face plate from the inside.
