I recently scored a classic Nikon F, chrome, leather insert on prism. In good cosmetic condition, considering its age - a few scuffs, two little dents on the prism housing. The shutter sounds good. A little dirt in the viewfinder.
But...the speed markings on the shutter speed dial have worn/flaked off. Since the dial has no stop positions this makes shooting difficult. Any suggestions for a fix? Other than the meter prism! I'd like to keep the cost down, of course!
Many thanks in advance!

Not sure if I understand your question. The shutter dial should have click stops if the shutter is working, Your problem would then be identifying the speed for each stop, or painting / getting a new speed scale on that worn shutter dial surface.
Some random ideas:
You could get a picture of a good dial, copy it to make a new scale on sticky paper, and paste it over your worn dial. You should be able to get your shutter dial to B, and use that position to get the correct orientation of your new scale.
Another idea would be to use your F with a Photomic prism, which usually do not have a working meter and go cheap. These prisms have an extension for the shutter dial, so you would be able to read the speed in the prism's shutter dial. Of course you could also get a readable shutter dial from a parts camera.
The F is a real classic.

The F is a real classic. The shutter works, and at least at the slow speeds sounds correct. There are click stops for each speed, but since there is no "stop" for rotation of the shutter speed selector, setting the speed without the speed scale is a problem. I think the Photomic prism, working or not, wrecks the classic lines of the F. I have several hand held meters; I learned photography with such, back in the day. I've found a shop which will do a CLA on the F at a reasonable price, they also have the dial on hand, probably from hulks. This way I'll have a fully functioning F. Now to find a classic Jaguar XK-120....

Fully agree with your opinion of the Photomic. And the XK...
