Recently i took my leica's out for a walk, used some different lenses and saw what came out of it. I can't say i was disappointed, but rather felt restricted by the lenses i've got for both my leica rangefinder and slr cameras. While i was surfing the net i more than once came across people raving about the leica noctilux 50 f0.95, wich if i am not mistaking costs at the moment around 12.000€. Now when using the f1.2 i found it to be a bit to extreme in blurring the background, the light gathering capabilities are great but with digital cameras these days bumping up the ISO in bad lighting conditions isn't the problem it used to be. So, do you really need to fork out that much money to "get the shot"? I don't think so, as to prove my point i took out the sigma 28 1.8 to make a self portrait of me at my worst, this rather cheap lens gave me exactly what i was looking for. So i guess that any lens will do as long as it gives you the image you're looking for, a (very) expensive lens isn't a fail proof recepy for getting the kind of images you had in mind. If you really want an expensive lens it may in some cases be a good idea to rent it and see if it lives up to your personal expectations and not solely on what others say about it. (if money is no object just go out and buy the noctilux, i'm sure it's a great lens :-) )

I have Bruges on my list… If you get there and you should like a good beer, be sure to visit the "halve maan" brewery. My wife and i had the "straffe Hendrik"classic and special 2023 along with a plate of selected local cheeses.

On the 4th of september 1944, during WWII Antwerp was liberated from the German occupation. This British11Th Armoured Devision Cromwell tank was the first to enter Antwerp, the final liberation followed at the 8th of November. The tank is now kept as a monument and is placed where it entered the city, to commemorate and honour the British liberation forces.

Nikkor 50 1:1.2 / 7 Artisans 50 1:1.1 bokeh Just did a little experiment to compare the nikkor to the 7 artisans when mounted on the Z6 Apparently the 7 Artisans has a warmer tone, more vignetting, softer bokeh and less cotrast than the nikkor, both lenses where used at full aperture (after all what's the point of having wide aperture lenses when they are used stopped down?) This was just a quick test, i'm sure there's more to these two lenses but to me a few things have become clear now. the full picture left the 7 artisans, right the nikkor and here an enlarged cut out:

I finally went out with the M4 with some lenses, among them the 7 artisans 50mm 1:1.1 the very shallow dept of field when used wide-open enables for good subject to background separation even at some longer distances. The price to pay is with this lens it is very difficult to find critical correct focus on rangefinder cameras. Here's an example: it does render the out of focus areas in a (can i say?) lovely old fashionned way. At the triumph meet:

You probably heard of the leaning tower of Pisa, but have you ever seen the leaning lighthouse of Chalkidiki?

Here's two maybe lesser known rangefinder cameras with interchangeable lenses. It's the King regula Super automatic, wich has selectable framelines for 35 - 50 and 135mm lenses and the Regula IIId. Both have a (non ttl) build in selenium light meter and a central shutter with speeds between 1sec and 1/300th (flash sync at all speeds) These rangefinders with central shutter are less complex than the slr's with central shutter of the period wich results in them developing less technical problems. In case you don't want to invest in leica rangefinder gear, these can be found rather cheap and are fun cameras to shoot with, still it is not easy to find the lenses.
