My family is from "the South" (Louisiana). Does that count? :-)

If you really want to boost your XE collection, seek out an XEb - it was a Japan-market-only version of 'something between an XE-5 and an XE-7. Very cool rig, and I sold it to someone on this forum. Bob, maybe?

If I'm not mistaken, the Minolta Maxxum 9000 was the first AF SLR. I had the poster on my wall as a 15 year old back in 1985... "Only the Human Eye Focuses Faster!"

A missing FG grip typically means that the previous owner utilized a motor drive (MD-14 or MD-E for the FG): the grip had to be removed to make allow the motor drive to fit.

Sooooooo, I'm a bit late checking in. Still have a pile of Nikons, and was just having a pleasant memory of the late, great Peter Wallage today while working on my old cars.

My whole childhood was chronicled on a 126 Instamatic like yours above. I've not a single picture in focus, but I still keep the camera around!

Is it just me? Or, is there a bit of Mamaya Secor DNA in that TL?

It's my understanding that the R-3 and XE were jointly developed - Leica built the mechanicals and Minolta provided the electronics (or, was it the other way around?).
Either way, the more I think about it, the more I miss my large Minolta/Rokkor collection...!

These XE Minoltas were truly a cut-above the rest. I liken them to Nikkormat in terms fo quality. When I as collecting Minolta's, all of my XE's eventually developed the same problem: the winder would seem to "stick" and not be albe to advance the film properly without fiddling with it. I found it interesting that all of my XE's had the same issue!
It boiled down to a lubricant failure, believe it or not. If your winder sticks, simply remove the camera's bottom plate and cycle the winder and shutter release while watching the mechanism in the lower part of the camera. It will become apparent that a small catch lever is the culprit. The 40 year old lubricant devolves into a sticky glue-like crud over time. Clean with alcohol, then re-apply LockTite brand "Super Lube" (TriFlow - common to bicycle applications is also a good choice - use very little though).
Voila. I then had three rather perfect XE's! An XE5, an XE7, and a rarer Japanese market XEb.
Good luck with it, Mark

Welcome to the Dark Side, Randy. That EL will probably resemble many of your old Minoltas. As you know, I once collected both Nikons and Minoltas because I liked them both so much - a shared sense of quality and durability. I had to sell off the Minoltas as my wife thought the collection was getting out of hand (I think Bob ended up with a few of them). Enjoy - and try not to drop it on your foot.

I had to chime in on this one. Mine used several funny words: instead of 'idea', he'd say "eye-uh-dee". One day he came home from our local camera store in New Braunfels, TX (Seidel Camera) announcing that he'd purchased a case of "Ag-a-fer" film (say it quickly - and he meant Agfa). Anyone he didn't think much of was a "No-count" (of no account), and anyone he disliked was an "in-grate". We sent two much loved cameras in for CLA one summer - a A-1 and an AE-1 Program - and they got lost so the shop awarded us a brand new "Ree-ko" XR-P (Ricoh).
