Just to bring you guys up to date, I have an addition to my collection, a Canon AE-1 with a 35-70 FD lens. A friend picked it up at a garage sale together with a lot of other non photography stuff for a song and as he's knows I collect cameras, passed it on to me. It's obviously had a lot of use but so far seems in perfect working order Its serial number is 1923307
If anyone has any more information about this model I would appreciate it

While here in New Zealand we are having a very wet and cold winter, the ice on the Wedderburn Dam is 15cm (about 6 inches) thick and they are running a curling tournament. At least it's not THAT cold in Taupo, our lake doesn't freeze over

My hard drive died recently and I have lost quite a lot of data so I'm busy recovering what I can

I managed to release the shutter, the film advance eventually moved a little bit further and the shutter released. I don't know what was sticking the film advance, I just tried it again some time later and without forcing anything, it moved freely. So, all's well, the camera is fine again.

If you don't have Microsoft Office, you can use 'Libre Office' which is an open source office suite, a free download and compatible with MS Office. The only thing missing is Publisher. Unfortunately MS haven't released the code for Publisher so it is not compatible with any of the open source desktop publishing programs. If that is no concern, a very good open source desktop publishing program is 'Scribus'
BTW, please don't use all upper case kennb, it comes across as shouting!

Hi. Welcome.
I was born and raised in Nottingham but have been a Kiwi now for 50 years. I learned photography in the '50s, my first camera was a Bessa II then when I went to 35mm a Voigtlander Vito II. I can still remembe the very first phot o I ever took , of my mum when I was about 4 yrs old, with my dad's Kodak Autographic Jnr No 1.

There are some nice 120 film cameras you can get, I have a Braun Gloria, a folding camera, the shutter assembly is on a pop out tube.

The library has a locked display cabinet so everything was quite secure.
I don't know if this is the right place to ask but does anyone have any information on the cost of cameras when they were introduced? I've found some prices on the net but not all
I'm not overly interested in the present value of my collection. I was very careful with my purchases on Trademe, which is a NZ only online auction site somewhat like Ebay. Other specimens of my cameras have sold for considerably more than I paid. I suppose it's the luck of the auction 'on the day'. I decided on what I could afford and kept to it. I'm still looking for my first two cameras, a 1951 Voigtlander Bessa II (i20 rollfilm which was too bulky for climbing and tramping) and a Voigtlander Vito II (it was tossup between that and the Ikonta 35 at the time, the voigtlander won as it was the same make as my first camera). Both cameras so far have sold for far more than I can afford. However, one day, I'll find one at the 'right' price!

I sent my Retina IIc to Chris for a CLA and it came back looking and feeling pretty much like new. Thanks Chris The local public library asked to put my collection on display there. THe cameras had been there for about a week when I had a phone call - would I be interewsted in being given another camera for my collection! Of course I accepted and now have a 1949 Zeiss Ikon Ikonta 35, the forerunner to the Contina. It;s a folding 35mm with a dropdown front Then another friend gave me 'on permanent loan' a Polaroid SX-70 which still has a filmpack in it although the battery has long since died so the pack is useless. I've put my collection on www.collectiblend.com so you can see most of what I've got on there although they are photos on their website. I've also recovered my Minolta 7000i from the friend who has been using it for a school photography course.

The first camera I bought was a second hand Voigtlander Bessa II with a coupled rangefinder. That was around 1952 from memory I've been trying to find another for my collection but those that come up on Trademe ( similar to Ebay but NZ only) are too pricey for me so far. One day I'll find one - I did get a Retina IIc in immaculate condition for a very reasonable price a couple of weeks ago, $57 which converts to approx GBP28

I have a Canon 24-105mm lens mug, it's insulated. has a cover ( looks like a lens cap) and is a good conversation piece. Unfortunately, it's the only Canon 'lens' I have, my gear is Sony/Minolta. I have seen a similar Nikon mug as well.

He is hiding his light under a bushel but Chris Sherlock in Dunedin, New Zealand also repairs cameras. He specialises in Kodak and was trained by them as a camera technician. His website is at homepages.ihug.co.nz/~Srawhiti/index.html

I wonder why the images have all been deleted. I would be interested in seeing them. Images are missing all over this forum too, not just this thread

You probably already know this but I found tht there is a serial number on the back of the propstand with Kodak in gothic style letters. Also the inside backs usually have a list of patent dates which can give you a lead on establshing the manufaturing dates
