Just a short drive from my little town is a factory that turn out this huge pipe like structures. They are around 50 meters long, made of steel and are carted out of here on huge low-loaders. any guesses what they are? Mamiya ZE-2, 28mm Mamiya lens with Fuji superia 400 *Hint*- They are tapered and are varying diameters (some look about 8 meters in diameter) - When they reach their final resting place they will assist in a truly noble cause. My first guess is masts for wind turbines. But the diameter looks a bit large for that.
But then again, even a single blade of those 3-blade turbines looks pretty huge when I've seen them strapped on a trailer.

Didn't a certain gentleman in the middle east order some giant tubes to make the world's biggest canon?
However considering the size of Dave's objects, and the fact they're in Tasmania, it's probably for the pipeline that delivers pepperberry bush liqueur to Melbourne.

Scott has to be right but hmm... that noble cause...hmm . Did Baron Munchausen hail from Tasmania? I know , that he built a huge cannon, that launched him to the moon. Yes it has to be a cannon to the Munchausen memory park. So I'm with Sidney.

You folks are way off base. The long pipes are tapered so that they can be joined end to end if necessary. They are eight meters high so that something very big can pass through them. It is so obvious. With US oil companies clamouring to build an oil pipeline from Alaska across Canada's arctic tundra, our immense caribou herds will be unable to migrate to their annual feeding and birthing gronds. There could be a massive die off and probable extinction of these noble animals. What could be more noble than Tasmania donating these enclosed and infinitely extendable bridges through which the caribou can cross over or under the ugly oil pipes without fear. Hats of to Tasmania and the noble and generous Tasmanians.

Well gentlemen I would like to say that they are giant snorkels for whales to avoid Japanese whalers in our southern oceans!....but alas Scott is right, they are wind turbine towers for renewable wind energy. Apparently these turbines are getting bigger and bigger and I read today that over in Germany they are constructing one Big Big sucker that has a blade diameter of 830 feet! Thank you all for your other suggestions and as yet I haven't heard of pepperberry bush liqueur, but I will certainly be putting that one on the shopping list

Dave: The Lark Distillery, 14 Davey St., Hobart. I'm sure they'd love to have those tubes for a pipeline.
