I treated myself to a new digital P&S today. The Canon A620 was on sale at one of the local camera stores, and I've had my eye on it for awhile. It's had good reviews and user reports.
I've only shot it around the house this evening, but so far it's everything I hoped it would be. Very small and lightweight (easy for me to carry around on my rehab walks), and the image quality looks quite good for a small-sensor digital.
It's reported to have excellent macro capability and it has my favourite P&S feature: a tilt & swivel LCD display. With it I can take pics of low-lying flowers without having to creep up on them commando style as I do with my SLR. I'm getting a bit beyond that one...
I'll take it on a walk tomorrow and if I get any decent snaps, I'll post one or two.

Here are a couple of macros from the new digicam: Plus a mug shot I took of myself in Starbucks early this morning. The little cam seems to be better at macro photography than glamour ;D Gene

Nothing wrong with that Gene.
Those macros are excellent. Even with a 'traditional' slr you would be looking at extension tubes, bellows or a reversing ring if you wanted to get much further in than these. Does it have a zoom capability? If so, what would you say it's equivalent focal length is (compared to a 35mm slr?

John, this little digi has a zoom that's about 35-140mm compared to 35mm. In macro mode it will focus to 10cm. A good carryaround cam.

Lovely macro shots Gene, brilliant colour and detail. It also coped brilliantly with the low light level in Starbucks. That little camera packs more than a punch, it packs dynamite! But then, of course, it's a Canon (hee, hee). . Peter W.

Peter, Ron, thanks for looking! Bad joke, Peter! LOL! For a small, relatively inexpensive cam, this little guy offers a lot. It'll be nice to use until I can start getting out again with my heavier SLR gear.

Outstanding, old friend. I can't decide if I want a small P&S or a panasonic big zoom. I think though it will be a P&S. This just maybe the one for me since it is spelled CANON

Hey Rick, I think you'd be happy either way. What I particularly like about this one is that it fits into a little belt pouch and I don't have to carry anything over my shoulder.

Hi Gene, Nicely done. Hope you don't mind but I saved the yellow tulip shot to use as my wallpaper on my desktop. I like to change shots every few days and yours just beckoned. I can relate to the heavier SLR gear too. Yesterday I had my Minolta XG-1 out with three new to me lenses to try out: a Rexatar 300 f4.5 (between 3-4 pounds by itself), a 300 Accura Supertel f5.5 and a Vivitar 85-205 f3.8. Both the Accura and Vivitar are so old they're pre-set aperture models. After lugging this around our harbour area I was glad to stop and discuss gear with an older fellow that seemed interested. As he was leaving I noticed the back of my camera had popped open and ruined an hour's shooting. Oh well, that digital sure looks good sometimes, lol.

Thanks Curt. I'm flattered. Despite their weight, I'm looking forward to getting back to shooting my Nikon F3HP and a bunch of Nikkor primes.
Don't you hate it when the back pops open? Yikes. That was bad luck!
