Hi, Well, I've succumbed!! . Today at a car boot sale John and I spotted a couple of P&S digital cameras in near as makes no difference new condition. They're not the latest rocket science technology (they're yesterday's rocket science technology), but we know the stall holder as a friend and he promised that if they don't work, or even if we don't like them, we can have our money back. They were very cheap, so we got them, one each. They're Kodak EasyShare CX4230, 2.0 megapixels, x3 optical zoom plus x2 digital zoom, auto focus and with a 16mb internal memory, or you can use a larger SD card for more pictures. According to Kodak the viewfinder is TTL, so according to the laws of the Meads and Persians it should be accurate. Suitable software and firmware is downloadable free from Kodak. When we got home we put some MiNH batteries in them, and they both fired up perfectly. We didn't get the camera to USB leads, but John borrowed an SD card from the camera of a friend who was visiting, shot off a few frames and used his card reader to put them on computer. The results looked excellent, so tomorrow I'll get myself a USB lead and shoot off some pics. I'll still use my Canon T70 for photographic outings, but as a small P&S with no running costs to slip in my pocket more or less every day it promises to be great fun! Peter

Hi Peter,
Well done. The 2mp figure is the important one - with 2mp you get a good usable picture, anything less and it looks pixellated. The optical zoom should be useful.
Does your printer have a card reader? If so, SD cards are so cheap now that a reasonable sized one will probably be less than the USB lead.
Look forward to seeing some 'ad-hoc' shots taken on the hoof.
Regards - John

Good find, Peter! You should have a lot of fun with it and one thing digis are really good for is taking pics of your film cams Happy explorations! Gene

If the printer doesn't have a card reader, then get a dedicated one. They are getting cheaper all the time. Mine is an Apacer Mega-Steno 7 in one. It cost very little even back a few years when I originally got it. You can get single card readers for all popular types of memory card for around the same price as the dedicated USB cable. Pus as an added bonus, you don't need to have the camera turned on to download the pictures.
You will have lots of fun with the digi. They are great for off-the-cuff shots. I am in the market for a cheapo P&S digi to take to work with me and have on my hip at all times.
