I am just starting to play with the Panasonic FZ50. First impressions are that it will do what I want it to do. That is get me through airports with less hassles than film and lighten my load. It is capable of producing 8X10 inch prints from from the least compressed JPEG file and I do not cringe from looking at them. These are two JPEG images taken today. Both are the same except that one is a greyscale conversion of the original color one. No, it will not replace 35mm scans from my Minolta 5400 Ver.1 and was not meant too. Digital sure has it's place though. Bob

Very nice Bob
Prefer the colour myself, but that's just personal preference.
I deplore the habit of giving ships and boats men's names. Any sailor will tell you that they are all bitches....
Sorry girls - LOL!

Thanks for the comment John. Yeah, I like the colour better myself and included the B&W to show what a quick and dirty conversion can or can't do depending on your point of view. Ships are commonly referred to has having a female gender but that is hardly reflected in the naming of naval vessels either. She was, the James Whalen that is, originally a fine steam powered tug with some ice breaking capabilities.

Bob
I discount names such as "Illustrious", "Warspite" (or "Enterprise"!). But even a name such as "Hood" is far better than "Samuel Hood" They are ladies by default. Same thing goes for hurricanes. To be hit by a tropical disturbance called "Alphonse" just isn't the same. I once encountered a screaming harridan of a witch called "Nelly" and I'll never forget her as long as I live!

ps Nelly was a hurricane, not someone I met on the street!!

It would be very disappointing to be battered by hurricane "Alphonse" it just lacks a certain something. You know though, you can't get more masculine than "King George V" or the "Prince of Wales". What is in a name? Obviously more than meets the eye.

Yeah...
Bad names - they collide with things or get themselves sunk. See what I mean?
Regards - John
ps Joking here, but some good people were lost on those ships.

Bob, glad to hear you're enjoying the FZ50. I owned an FZ20 for about a year and found it excellent. In fact it was my experience with it that led me to purchase a Canon S3 IS recently, which is a digicam very similar to the FZ50. I find using it a blast.
Some of the things I remember about the FZ20 were its natural colour palette and how nice conversions to B&W looked from the Panny images.
Enjoy!
