I posted this picture deep in another thread that I doubt many will visit again and I think it worth viewing. This is a copy of a woman's portrait that I'm guessing dates to the 1890's. She's the mother of an older friend of my father. The image is quite sharp and I suspect it was done by a professional in a studio. The woman is likely dressed in her finest clothing. Her family name was Stunkle and they were farmers. Walker

This looks very similar to a photo I have of my paternal great-grandfather and grandmother and their children (including my grandfather) shot about 1892. I've never got a copy of it because it is in a oval frame and the print itself was molded while still wet to bulge out in a 3D effect. That makes it pretty much impossible to scan and because the print is curved it is almost impossible to eliminate reflections if IU shoot it with another camera--unless it is at an angle like this.

Another victorian lady - my wife's grandmother.

I love these old Victorian pictures. I sometimes find them in flea markets among boxes of old postcards and other ephemera, and get them when I do. When I've got the time and need to relax on the computer I have a shot at restoring them. Here's one I got earlier this year. Not a Victorian lady, but a Victorian gentleman. Obviously a studio picture, by someone who didn't believe in having the subject looking straight into the camera. No idea who he is, there was nothing on the back. I've included an 'as found' and a restored version. Not overmuch work needed compared with some, just cleaning up general grubbiness and foxing from damp, plus sepia toning. Some of the shadows in the suit are a trifle too hard, but overall I'm quite pleased with it. Victorian gentleman as found. Victorian gentleman restored. PeterW

Wonderful pictures everyone! I find the dress interesting... both women and men. Wayne & John have family keepsakes and Peter has done a very nice job of cleaning up his Victorian Gentleman.
Beauty is ageless and I often wonder how some of the lovely ladies of 100+ years past would look were they to be young women today.
