Is there a camera collector's magazine being published out there somewhere?

Johnny
If you mean monthly publications then I am not aware of any that deal specifically with cameras but there could be. Some of the historical societies have a monthly news letter but I think you have to sign up and they deal only with specific brands. There are reference books out there dealing again with specific brands. Are you looking for info on any specific brand?

I have to agree with Bob. Some of the camera historical societies publish newsletters, but only for their specific brands...and not always monthly. Some are quarterly or annual, and available only to members. Over the years, I've accumulated info on a lot of photo "stuff." Looking through some it, I found these two possibilities: If you live in Australia, I've been told there is a worthwhile bi-monthly magazine called " Photographic Trader" which offers a national marketplace for collectors to buy and trade their collections. It's apparently sold at most of the larger news agents, or you can subscribe. If a subscription is available, I presume it can be sent anywhere. I've never seen it, so maybe one of our members in that area of the world could comment. The only info I have about how to contact the "Photographic Trader" is an email address (and I have no idea how old the reference is, or whether it is still valid): enquiries@phototrader.com.au The other note I have is for a magazine in Germany (published only in German, unfortunately), called PHOTODeal. Again, I have no idea how old the note is, or if the magazine still exists, but PHOTODeal is supposedly a full color photographic magazine for collectors, camera enthusiasts and technophiles. It sounds like it may have more in it than cameras...but it's another I have never seen, just heard about.

PhotoDeal is an excellent collectors magazine, beautifully produced, and the publisher, a chap called Hillebrand is again looking for someone in England to became the co-publisher of an English language version. About 12 or so years ago, when it first started, Valerie and I were interested in the English language side of it, and met Hillebrand a couple of times, but when Valerie developed cancer the idea was dropped. I don't know if anyone on the board would be interested. Paul perhaps? To get in touch with him, have a look at www.photodeal.de/allgemein/english.htmit's in English. PeterW

Photographic Trader is published bi-monthly and sells at a single issue price of A$4.00 in newsagents. Overseas subscriptions are available at A$38.00 for Asia/Pacific and A$48.00 for the rest of the world. Overseas single issue prices are A$6.35 and A$8.15 respectively. Those prices are taken from the current issue.
The classified ads are a major feature and each issue carries hundreds of them. There is no better place (in this country) to search for those collectable items, the sheer quantity offered being unmatched, as far as I know. There is quite a bit of commercial advertising but such magazines wouldn't exist without it, of course.
The current issue contains the following articles- The Kodak 35 Part 2: Lets add a rangefinder and see if it helps. A Cabinet of Curiosities Those Crazy Zeiss Designers! Going to Extremes in Raw. Or, another reason to use Raw format.
Not a lot of reading, although it does vary from issue to issue. I suspect most people buy it for the advertising, particularly the private classifieds. The name of the magazine tells the story.
The articles generally tend to be very authoritative. The Kodak piece is written by one Lyle Curr. I recall reading some years back that his Kodak collection was considered to be the largest in Australia.
I have no connection with the magazine, incidentally.

The British weekly magazine Amateur Photographer frequently runs review articles on old cameras, usually written by Ivor Matanle. www.amateurphotographer.co.uk (but I couldn't see anything there on this particular theme but lots of other stuff availble as pdf).

I think what we are doing here has put a lot of camera magazines, collector and otherwise, out of business. Today you can find more information on a particular camera (some of it even accurate) in a few minutes on the web than you could find in weeks of searching in the pre web days. Why get a magazine when there are forums covering just about every brand and model ever made.
Another example. When I went to work for a book publisher in 1996, each year we received a new edition of "Books in Print" which lists virtually every book in print in the English-speaking world. Cost us a couple of thousand dollars annually for the multi-volume set that took about six feet of shelf space. About the start of the new century we discovered all the information in Books in Print is available or free on the web if you know how to look for it. That saving alone more than pays our annual web connection costs.

What you say is true, Wayne. The internet is certainly changing the need for published (printed) works. Since I've spent a good portion of my life in the publishing business, I find that sad. Even though my first stop for information these days is the web, I still subscribe to many photo publications, although the number has been dropping, and will probably drop again in January, as I don't intend to renew most of them. I'll probably keep getting Popular Photography and the UK pub Amateur Photographer. They seem to have the best tests and articles. POP for current offerings, and AmPho has nice vintage camera articles. I don't receive any of the "collector" magazines. The ones I've seen are pretty narrowly focused, and expensive (perhaps I just have not seen the right ones?) If there's any one publication I wish would go online, it's Jim McKeown's Guide to Classic and Antique Cameras. I'd subscribe to it, if it was available. Buying the massive printed books every few years is not exorbitant, and I find myself referencing it all the time!

Hi Johnny, Actually we have several female members who enjoy using the classic cameras. Rachel as a moderator also collects some very nice cameras.

I don't believe in sex discrimination among cameras but I am reasonably certain with such a name my Pearlette must be female. And with such sleek and elegant lines I am sure my beautiful Vitessa N can only be female. So I guess I am a collector of female cameras inter alia.

Indeed yes, Drako, I married one. My late wife Valerie was a keen camera collector as well as being a writer about classic cameras, and an excellent photographer and photojournalist. A better photographer than I ever will be.
And, of course, we have our own Rachel; collector, moderator and also an excellent photographer.

Mickey Mickey: Obviously you don't collect Russian cameras. It's my understanding that in Russian, things like ships, planes, cameras, etc., all are masculine gender, so all my zorkies, FEDs and Kievs are guys. Even the women in the instruction manuals from the '50s and '60s look like guys!
