Curt: I have to correct myself. I'm a long-time Same Cooke fan, so I tried to look up when he recorded "Under the Boardwalk." From what I've discovered...he didn't. He was prolific... "Another Saturday Night (and I ain't got nobody)" "Cupid (draw back your bow)" "Twistin' the Night Away" "Having a Party" "Bring it on Home to Me" ...the last three being 1962's #1, #4 and #9 songs, respectively (quite a feat...three of the Top 10 songs for a whole year). But no "Under the Boardwalk" -- at least no reference that I could find. Every reference said it was The Drifters, in 1964, with Johnny Moore singing lead, that first made it. It was remade by the Stones, John Mellencamp and even The Jackson 5. There was an obscure reference to it being on a Herman's Hermits album. One reference even mentioned a cover by Bruce Willis (I know I wouldn't want to hear that version)! I could have sworn Sam Cooke had done it too. But then, I get things from yesterday mixed up now, too. ----- and Geoff... ...we're about the same age, and I thought I also had a long memory...but maybe the "old" thing does have something to do with it! LOL! ;D

....A couple of hours ago I played Jo Stafford singing "Make Love to Me". I guess the censors were less active in the 1950's.... I think they would have been very active, had Jo sung " making love to me" in the 50s. There were several layers of interpretation, and the subtle difference between "make love" and "making love" would have triggered alarms all over some prissy face. Don't get me wrong. There are moments in today's world when I miss some self-censorship. By the same token, I don't advocate suppression of free speech, but it would sure be nice if someone considered the primary audiences and governed themselves accordingly. I think children (who are the ones most often listening to new music) would be far better off with a better example than we give them today. Sure, we "rate" music and videos...but there is little goverance over who buys what. How can there be, when a 17-year-old is the one selling to his/her buddies? However, I've deviated a long way from my own original posting!

Ron
Great series of shots, sometimes the kids know best eh. I hate using a tripod but they are essential for this type of work and the results prove it.

Think I may be able to help. I suspect it was Ben E King, whose voice, while not approaching the rough/smoothness of Sam Cooke may have been close enough to cause the confusion. And of course, he'd been the lead singer of.... The Drifters.
You missed one Ron:
"I was born by the river - in a little tent" (Long time coming).
Personally, I would say that the saying "If you can remember the 60's then you weren't there" is total rubbish. It was exactly the other way round - you had to be there!
Regards - John

Regards - John Oh, I remember them all right! Even though there were moments I was doing things where I should not have remembered -- and would have grounded (how's that for an antiquated term?) my own boys for doing!

....But back on photography...Ron...I have been in Grand Haven about 3 times...but now will look more since you said go left and not right. Ron Head Kalamazoo, MI Ron: There are a lot of neat areas to shoot, in and around Grand Haven. If you go inland a little, you come on the south shore of the Grand River again, in several places. Some are quite picturesque. There are a couple of bayous in the area, too, with places to shoot that I keep meaning to get to.......
