Scott, Though I lived in China for over two years, I never went to Beijing! The lot of the expat I'm afraid: I was working 7 days a week, and when I did get away it was always short trips to local mountains. However, it is great to hear of the Camera market. There wasn't a camera market in Nanchang, despite the new Phenix factory being located there. The old Phenix factory is just down the road. I never saw a Great Wall SLR in China (I've since seen one here in NZ on an internet auction). I'll make a pilgrimage to the camera market when I (finally) make it to Beijing hopefully to find some more odd Chinese cameras. A quick search turned up two interesting tidbits of information: www.camprice.com/pub/show/Beijing/index.htmlwww.tdctrade.com/imn/03110601/optical031.htmIs this the market you were thinking of?

I wish I had been there long enough to find a camera market. Of course, I was there in 1986...and I'm not sure it was even there at that time. Drank a lot of Chinese beer while I was there (not bad), even brushed my teeth in it one morning, when the "boiled" water delivered to our room ran out. We were admonished many times not to drink the water. The only one in our group who did, in the form of ice cubes in a drink, got a bad case of Montezuma's (or was that Mao's ) revenge by morning. And I can't help but think of McDonald's food called "exotic" as funny...but it didn't exist in China in 1986! And that description of the service in a Friendship Store is so accurate, it's not funny! I think $1.00 a day would make me apathetic, too...but not if I could pay my rent for a month on 60 RMB! Ron
