Hi Dave, Looks like a nice place to live, quiet and clean. I bet Ron Herron will really like these photos too.

Ditto to what curt said. I like the first shot, taken from a low angle? That works well but is a thing I often forget to try.

Dave,
It looks like the beautiful kind of town in which I would choose to live. Unfortunately I am rather fond of big, busy, bustling, bursting Toronto.

Welcome aboard, Dave. Really nice shots. Looks like the sort of place where an Idaho country boy would feel right at home.

Nice shots! I'd say Tasmania is a perfectly remote little island to live on. Just what I'd love after living in NYC all my life.

Hi Dave,
Nice pictures of a very peaceful looking town. Is the bronze(?) of the person with the Penny Farthing of any particular Victorian cyclist, or just generic?

Peter, The cyclist is a representative of our traditions here. Evandale is the venue of the National Penny Farthing Championships, when the sleepy village of Evandale grows to ten times it's normal population for the Evandale Village Fair. Check out the link:- www.evandalevillagefair.com

I suppose you have to be careful to avoid the whirling Tasmanian Devils. From what I've seen, they aren't too smart, however.

John:
Actually they are protected now. The biggest danger is some sort of facial tumor--like a cancer, that is killing em. I think there was branch of the species that went extinct in the '30s. The Devils remind me a little of our badgers. They aren't marsupials but they are nasty critters that will eat anything and don't even like each other much.

Dave: Thanks for posting the link to the pictures of Penny Farthing racing in Evandale. I can see now why they've got the bronze. The way some of those racers are leaning over into the bends shows real skill, and lots of practice. I loved the picture of the little girl on the miniature one - at least, I presume she's a girl - pedalling away like a good 'un with proud Dad (?) in attendance. Kids seem to have a limitless sense of natural balance, or maybe it's just lack of fear! In case anyone thinks riding a Penny Farthing is easy, I can promise you it isn't. I tried a Penny Farthing once, back in the 1950s, in the early days of the Montagu Motor Museum (now the National Motor Museum) at Beaulieu when a group of us enthusiats for old motorcycles were delivery some veteran motorcycles. Never again! It takes a LOT of pedal power to get that big front wheel moving, and when I came to first bend I fell off!! The d**n thing would NOT come back upright again. I've riden a couple of circa 1900 motorcycles and driven a few cars of the same era. They're difficult enough to get the hang of, but by comparison they're a stroll in the park. Those old Victorian cyclists went up a notch in my estimation, and I've got real admiration for the way the Evandale riders are hacking it. Nice to see the skill isn't lost. I wish there were more events like that in the UK. The Penny Farthing was, after all, a UK invention by James Starley in 1871. As far as I know there's only one Penny Fathing event held here, at Knutsford in Cheshire - and that's held only once every 10 years! You can see pictures of it on the Knutsford website at www.virtual-knutsford.co.uk/frameset.php?main=/tourism/great_race.htm The main race in 1980 at Knutsford, the last one mentioned on the website, was won by women's world champion Nicky Armstrong from Australia, and they didn't even put a picture of her on the website. Local news photogs ... HAH!! I wonder if she ever raced at Evandale. PeterW

Hey Guys, Don't be worried about Tassie Devils. Contrary to their carton persona thay are very timid nocturnal animals that don't attack anything that isn't already dead. In fact their whole diet is centered around rarely prey but mostly carrion. They are the world's largest marsupial and as such, raise their young in their pouch like koalas and Kangaroos. They make a lot of noise, which is mostly all bluff! Very much like politicians!!!! Let me tell you there is nothing better than camping in the wilderness and having sleep broken by cranky' screaming devils! Love them why will still can! Our poor little Tassie Devils are being decimated by a cruel facial tumor cancer and we are all trying so hard to save them now!
