This marbled orb weaver (beneficial-to-garden spider) was setting up shop under a corner of the canopy over our back-deck swing. Managed to get this shot hand-held with my Viv 90mm macro lens on a D200. Gene

Excellent shot, Gene. It looks like you used a light box but I know that you didn't. You have an amazing eye for images.
I also have a 90mm f/2.9 Macro Vivitar lens in M42 mount and it's very well constructed..... not to mention sharp!

Another nice catch. Amazing how somethings that are normally considered ugly show they really are not when done with a macro.

YIKES! I woke up a couple months ago with over 100 spider bites on my arm, and I've been bitten by a brown recluse spider. I hate the things!

"AIN'T SHE NICE? LOOK HER OVER ONCE OR TWICE."
Well worth additional looks.
Are you still using the swing or are you letting Charlotte weave her orb?

"Spiders and snakes...I do not like either."
Ron,
Be fair. How sociable would you be if you had too many legs or not enough legs?

Gotta agree with Ron (Kamera) and Randy. Spiders and snakes (more so spiders) are on my list of "why aren't they endangered?" species. But I gotta admit, Gene's got a nice shot of one of the little creepy crawlies..... Makes me itch, though!

This little beetle thought he could hide from me, and that's the smallest thing I've shot. This is on film though.

Thanks for the comments about Charlotte. Mickey, we're letting her spin. She usually ducks into the corner if we're around.
I'm not bad about snakes and spiders -- they sometimes startle me and I'm wary at times. When I lived in Arizona we had lots of black widows, scorpions and rattlesnakes around. You were always careful not to put your hand into some cranny you couldn't see into, and to this day I still knock my boots and shoes together and shake them out before wearing them. I once had a scorpion in my banjo case! Gahh.
But we're lucky -- in Ontario there are very few highly toxic spiders or snakes. Only one type of rattler, and it's rare.
I must admit that when I started to become a naturalist (an outgrowth of birding) my attitude towards insects and reptiles changed significantly. Now I welcome the chance to watch them and, when possible, to photograph them.
Randy, great shot of that insect!

Thanks Gene, spiders freak me out. (I've been bit too many times) Bob wanted to know what film camera I used but I didn't want to break balk here on the digital board. Minolta X-570 with Soligor 280mm Macro Zoom on Kodak 400 hand held.
