I got a 30D last week after much deliberation, Nikon 200D, Sony Alpha100, etc, etc. ( I do need the dasterdly digital for work) I shoot a lot of 35mm film and have some Canon glass so, that fact plus the low noise etc, helped me decide to get the 30D. Wellll, a couple of months ago I bought a ‘Kuminor” 500mm lens for about 40 bucks on eBay, just for fun. I figured it was a joke anyway and I could put an eyepiece on it and have a telescope, guide telescope or something of the sort. You’ve probably seen these lenses on ebay and chuckled. I did. They are primes, f8 to f32, light as a feather, and like a short baseball bat. I never got around to mounting it on my EOS1, my main film camera, but thought I’d mount it on the 30D for a laugh. Ha. Here is the result. I live in a small Texas college town near Austin that’s pretty photogenic and here’s the college main hall. Here’s the normal 18-55 kit lens, no sharpening or anything: Here’s the Kuminor, no sharpening, anything at f22 Here's a moon shot I did about an hour ago: What I think is that I may have found the perfect takearound, beach, picnic 500mm lens. Perhaps they’re like Holgas, each having it’s own personality. They also go by the name of Kalimar lenses and there are several on ebay right now. Anyway it’s worth the money and a true collectible. Cheers Jules

Those are some impressive shots. I have seen the lenses at a Ritz camera but never gave them much thought. I would like to see what they do wide open

Very impressive. You definately got a buy. One of the problem with that type of lens is that only one in 10 examples may be that good.

Church in town very near sunset: And here it is with a bit of sharpening. Notice the flock of birds way off. Later this week I will shoot some film to see how it works out. Cheers Jules

That lens is working just great. You never really know when you buy a 500/8 mirror lens...some are good but I believe most aren't. You lucked out.

Some joke. That is the best bang for the buck I have seen in awhile. Good shots and good hunting for new ones.

Going back and re-reading the original post, I see that it is not a mirror lens, but rather one of those, as he says, long as a bat ones you see advertised at times in some of the major retailer ads. Prices around $300!?
Have been tempted to try one, but was always very leery of the quality.
Rick...thanks for pointing me back to the original post to read it more carefully!!

Ron, I saw one for $99 but passed on it. With all the FD mount long glass I have it woul;d be sensless for me. I have a Sigma 400 f5.6 for my EOS cameras and that is enough.

I had a Kalimar 500 once for my T70 I bought new for about $125. Of course it wasn't nearly as sharp and fast as a mirror lens but for the $$ I got a lot of use out of it.
