Just picked up this Praktica on evilbay. Never owned one, and a friend of mine here on the board says they are great cameras. Can't wait till it shows up! A steal at $26 bucks! Surprisingly, there seems to be quite a few Super TL Prakticas (also badged as the Hanimex) around in better than average condition. They are hefty and solid and quality appears to be quite good. The only real weakness may be the internal meter which have been inaccurate or just plain dead on many of the examples I've seen. With a handheld meter, that's not a problem. They'll accept the range of M-42 mount lenses so you have a wide choice and if your new Super TL is in good condition, you should be pleased with it. Walker

The Super TL arrived in the mail today. Man! I got a great deal! It doesn't look like it was ever used, and it and the case smell like new. Meter works, shutter works, what more could a man want?

Randy, if the meter on your new Super TL is accurate then you do indeed have a fine example. I note that the lens on yours is a Meyer Domiplan and it's supposed to be pretty good. The Super TL was also sold with the Meyer Oreston 50mm f/1.8 and the highly regarded CZ Jena 50mm f/1.8 Pancolar. They are both fairly easy to find in excellent condition for only a few dollars and the extra f-stop helps when focusing and when the extra speed is needed. As far as I can tell, the Super TL is a solid, well-built camera that should serve you reliably for a long time. Walker The Super TL arrived in the mail today. Man! I got a great deal! This is my first Praktica, and I appreciate the information. What is the speed of that lens? I don't see it anywhere. Is it also f/1.8?

The Domiplan is an f/2.8 triplet design and was a base lens for the Praktica Super TL although I understand that there was also other lens offered that cost less. Those who have used the Domiplan claim good performance but not up to the level of the 6-element Orestons and Pancolars. Here's a link to a Praktica site that you should find interesting and informative: www.praktica-users.com/index2.htmlWalker This is my first Praktica, and I appreciate the information. The subject of Praktica jolted my mind that I have one in my collection, usable which hasn't seen use in awhile.
It is a Praktica Nova B and it will be coming out this weekend for some pics at a Blue Grass Festival. Guess that is what my wife means when she says I even forget at times which of my old cameras do work and use them more.

Look what I found in an old magazine today! Wish I had one of these for all my cameras! I laminated this one.

Hi Randy
My Super TL underexposes slightly - I compensate with the meter needle position rather than the ASA setting. Find it less confusing. It's a nice solid camera - you can't mistake the Praktica Kerchunk. Use a long lens for shy wildlife!!
One point - notice you got a flash with it, and of course the Super TL doesn't have a hotshoe. You can get a 'coldshoe' to fit to it which uses the eyepiece cover to hold it in position. My recommendation is to try to find a tripod mount type grip which incorporates a cold shoe because the eyepiece type takes the eyepiece cover almost to the end of its thread. The tripod mount type cuts down on red-eye as well.
Good luck with it. Regards - John

Know where I can get a coldshoe?.......anyone?

Randy,
I've never seen a Hanimex Praktica.
I do have an old Hanimex Topcon so they did similar branding in the UK. There are quite a few Hanimex branded lenses about.
My brother-in-law had a Super TL when they were new. A tough little camera.

Hi Randy, I have a Praktica L, 2-Super TL's, LTL, LTL3, Nova, Nova B, 3-MTL3's, MTL5, B100, and a couple of early Novas for parts. I'll check for a cold shoe. Other than the parts cameras, all still work well (so far).

Thanks Curt, I've been looking for a cold shoe, but I have come back empty. Would appreciate your help.
