This is peliminary research for a medium/long term purchase. I have 3 vintage Nikon SLRS two F's and one Nikkormat Ftn. With them I have built up a decent set of lenses. Now I am doing some peliminary thinking/research on getting a F3 as I fell in love with my brother's or an FM(2). The question is do all my 1960's/early 1970's NIkkor glass fit the FM(2)? This will decide what I aim for. down the road.

The early Nikon glass can be used on the F3 and the FM (stopped down metering), because they both have an ai indexing pin that can be swung out of the was so it doesn't interfere with the older lenses. I'm not sure if that feature carried over into the later FM 2s and 3s. It seems like it didn't.

The FM2 cannot have an early type Non-Ai lens safely mounted on it. It will make serious contact with the index pin. The FM and FE are OK plus the F3 and F4 are Ok with earlier lenses. I don't know about the FM3 Phil

Ok, that answers my question I guess unless there are other opinions out there. I will be looking at either an F3 or an FM in 2006. As much as I like the idea of an FM3, its a little out of my range at the moment.

The FM3 doesn't have the swing out pin. The F3 is a great camera and my work horse.
