To reiterate what Mr. Herron passed on, the Argus company originated in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. And there is an Argus museum there today. Much information can be obtained through the museum, and on the Argus forum...many informed members there who are Argus diehards. They even have annual gathering of the members.
The camera was made to compete with Kodak, and initially sold along side them in Drug Stores in the USA.
My favorite remains the "brick" and I have a couple that are mint and workable today. The brick as it was unique.
In later years, and generally their SLR's were made by Cosina, Chinon and Mamiya badged as Argus.

My Argus/Mamiya Prismat arrived yesterday (Thursday) The bayonet mount lens is marked Argus-Sekor 58mm f 1.7 serial 963906 looks clean inside, focuses smoothly. The body is good on the outside, the shutter works, the lever wind very smooth, the viewfinder and mirror are clean. Serial number 3886542, still has the JC11 ? sticker on it. Internally it is a bit sticky and there is some white mould on the shutter blinds. I was wondering just how rare this camera as an Argus, with this lens is now.
